(Sports Network) - The Columbus Crew's Guillermo Barros Schelotto's three assist effort in his team's 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Sunday was enough to earn the MLS Cup Most Valuable Player award. With the honor, he becomes just the third player in league history to win the regular season MVP award and the MLS Cup MVP award in the same year. Goalkeeper Tony Meola was the first, in 2000, when he led the Kansas City Wizards to their MLS Cup championship. Forward Carlos Ruiz did it two years later, leading the Los Angeles Galaxy to their first MLS title after scoring the golden goal in overtime.

While Schelotto's three assists were a record for an MLS Cup Final, Ante Razov holds the playoff record with four assists for the Chicago Fire in a 2000 quarterfinal match against the New England Revolution.

Schelotto had six assists for the entire postseason, tying the league record for one playoff season. Marco Etcheverry set the record with six assists in 1999, matched by Razov the following year.
