WASHINGTON - D.C. Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) repaired two broken water mains overnight in the Glover Park neighborhood and a third in northwest.

The water was back on as Tuesday morning dawned in Glover Park after a long night without for residents and a long night of work by WASA crews. Resident Leslie Phillips notes, "So, there was a sink full of dirty dishes. We had to brush our teeth with bottled water."

A 16" water main broke at Manor Place NW, causing the roads between 37th Street and Observatory Place and 37th Street between Manor Place and Tunlaw Road to close. The break caused the street to erode, which also required repair, and there was low water pressure in the area.

WASA officials reported a second break occurred later Monday evening on Observatory Place. This is a smaller 8" break that left about 60 homes without water. WASA reported that a gas break also reported at the site had to be repaired before work could commence on the water main; as of 1:30 a.m., crews had begun work on the water main, so Washington Gas was believed to have completed their work on the gas main.

A third water main break occurred on 16th Street NW some time overnight on Monday; drivers found some streets in the vicinity of 16th and P through S Streets closed, particularly northbound in the direction of Colonial Heights. After a 12" main broke overnight, water lines in this area were turned off to stop water from spewing into the street, and WASA also re-routed water so that neighborhood residents were not without water for long.

The 16th Street break will be repaired relatively soon, though crews will have to dig up the main to repair it, so street closures will continue there for some time. The Glover Park breaks will require even longer to repair, since that those sites the road buckled and will need further work beyond just the main repair.

Rex Case of WASA explains, "This our busy time of year. When it gets good and cold, unfortunately the mains break and that's what we do. We do emergency work."
