The Montgomery County (web|news) Council is resisting some proposed budget cuts for schools as the county works to close a projected $500 million budget shortfall for next year.
County Executive Isiah Leggett called for $49 million in cuts, including a $19 million reduction for county schools. Council members said Tuesday the bulk of the education cuts would be premature, but accepted $3 million in cuts suggested by the school system.
The council accepted most of Leggett's plan to delay hiring for vacant government jobs, cut travel budgets and put off buying new equipment.
A total of $33 million in budget cuts were approved. Some Ride On bus schedules will be reduced, the number of police recruits will be cut and libraries will have less money to buy books.
