Before Joe and Sharon Donzanti even boarded their puppy for the first time, they toured at least half a dozen kennels. And now they have done virtually everything to find him.
Deano, a 12-pound, 11 month-old Italian Greyhound puppy is missing.
"It's been a rollercoaster. It's been a nightmare. We pray that he's alive and okay. And that he'll come back to us," said Sharon Donzanti, Deano's owner.
Last Sunday, less than 24 hours after dropping Deano off at Dogwood Acres Pet Retreat, the puppy apparently scaled a five-foot chain link fence.
"We weren't aware that he could be a fence jumper. I'm not sure even the owners were aware of his newfound ability," said Mary Ann Sullivan, manager at Dogwood Acres.
The Donzantis called the kennel right after landing in San Francisco to make sure Deano had his winter coat. In disbelief, they learned he was gone.
"It's a disaster to us basically," said Joe Donzanti, Deano's Owner. The couple immediately turned around to come home.
"How do you prevent this? Well, geez, we thought we did everything we could," said Joe Donzanti.
"People have called in and said they have spotted him. We're just really having a hard time catching him," said Sullivan.
The kennel has set five traps for Deano. Search and rescue dogs have looked for him. An Italian Greyhound breeder even brought her dogs to help search.
"We have to be strong for the dog, because whatever we're going through, it's far worse for the dog," said Sharon Donzanti.
For at least a week, Deano has survived the elements. His owners just want him home.
Deano was most recently spotted on Sunday and was still wearing a yellow dogwood acres collar. This Thanksgiving, the Donzantis will spend the day searching for their beloved puppy. They say they are grateful for the many strangers who have tried to help.
