WASHINGTON - A D.C. family is angry and fearful after burglars struck their home and a number of others. Detectives say the bandits struck along Chevy Chase Parkway this weekend while residents were sleeping inside.
"It's frightening to think that someone would come into the house at night," said Ingrid Creppell.
Creppell, her husband, 15-year-old daughter, and 13-year-old son slept soundly Saturday night in their Northwest home on Chevy Chase Parkway. The next morning, they were stunned to learn that as they were sleeping criminals had crept through the house.
"When I woke up in the morning I realized one of the windows was open, the screen was ripped," said Creppell. "Then I looked around and realized a lot of things were taken."
The burglars slashed open a window screen and got in through a window just feet away. Everyone in the family was upstairs. Only the 13-year-old was still awake.
"My son was ready and heard a door and he thought it was me coming to tell him to stop reading," shared Creppell.
She's thankful her son did not go downstairs or he would have come face to face with thieves who stole three laptop computers, a purse, credit and debit cards, and the family's sense of safety in their own home.
"They seem to sleep well but I couldn't sleep very well last night," said Creppell about her family after the burglary.
Police sent out warnings to residents urging them to lock their windows and doors because officials say another family was also robbed as they slept in their home on the same street that same night.
