Alexandria
(web | news) , Va. - Controversy surrounds a store that sells adult sex toys in historic Alexandria. At issue is whether the store should be allowed to stay open.
Old Town Alexandria is known for its historic décor and its classic architecture. It's also home to two adult-themed shops just eight blocks apart.
La Tache opened a year ago and Lotus Blooms opened just this past October.
"The city gave them permission to open, and they should honor that commitment from an integrity standpoint," said Alexandria resident Tim Adams.
Some people are not so happy about the stores.
"Sometimes I've come by here, and you see some pretty inappropriately dressed mannequins," said Alexandria resident Matthew Puccio outside Kendall's. "Even with the lingerie on them, it's not something for kids to see.
On Thursday, city planners declined to approve a ban on additional adult businesses. The measure would have allowed La Tache to stay open. But Lotus Blooms would have been forced to close after an 18-month period.
Alexandria resident Kristin Patterson said about Kendall's, "It certainly doesn't fit with what historically Old Town is known for, but I think that's a good thing."
La Tache managers aren't commenting but Lotus Blooms argues it provides a needed service to the community. The store also says it has taken pains to move more adult-themed items away from the front window and public view.
