WASHINGTON - Drivers should expect major traffic delays on New York Avenue in Northeast Washington beginning next spring.

The District Department of Transporation is launching five major construction projects along the busy corridor, with traffic troubles potentially lasting through April 2011.

Drivers can expect lanes to split and traffic to be routed around barriers, ramps for the 9th Street bridge to close, and lane and shoulder closures.

RESURFACING/REHABILITATION OF BRENTWOOD ROAD, NE; 9TH STREET NE; W STREET, NE; EDGEWOOD STREET NE.

  • Project also includes: Resurfacing, reconstructing and upgrading selected roads; improving curbs, gutters, sidewalks and storm water drainage systems.

REPLACEMENT OF 9TH STREET BRIDGE, NE OVER NEW YORK AVENUE AND RAILROADS.

  • Project also includes: Improving pedestrian safety with wider sidewalks and enhanced, signalized intersections; installing ornamental light poles and fixtures, fencing, railings and landscaping, curbs and medians. 

RECONSTRUCTION OF NEW YORK AVENUE BRIDGE OVER RAILROAD TRACKS, NE AND APPROACH ROADWAYS.

  • Project also includes: Relocating and improving the existing bridge support system; improving approach roads and adjacent sidewalks.

SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS FOR FIRST STREET/FLORIDA AVENUE/NEW YORK AVENUE/ECKINGTON PLACE, NE.

  • Project also includes: Upgrading traffic signals, streetlights, crosswalks and sidewalks; implementing a circular flow to allow easy access for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

RECONSTRUCTION OF FIRST STREET, NE FROM K STREET TO NEW YORK AVENUE, NE.

  • Project also includes: Replacing existing road structures with new ramps and four operational lanes.
