JARRATT, Va. - John Allen Muhammad (news) , the D.C.-area sniper who was executed Tuesday night, wrote a final letter to be read aloud, according to Charlene Patterson, an attorney for his family.

But Patterson said Muhammad's family thought it would be inappropriate to read the letter or disclose it's contents at this time.

"This morning the family would just like to express remorse and everything that's going on today," she said. "I just want you all to know that we have a letter. Right now we're not prepared to disclose anything that's in the letter because it would be extremely inappropriate at this time. Based on the emotional climate, some of the comments that I'm sure you are aware of last night, the family is not comfortable disclosing any of the details of that letter at this time.

"Maybe at a later date we will be prepared to talk more about [the letter]," Patterson added.

J. Wyndal Gordon, an attorney for John Allen Muhammad, said he was unaware of the letter's contents. ABC 7 also spoke to Muhammad's son from his first marriage, Lindbergh Williams, by phone Wednesday but he would not release any details about the letter.

Many victims' family members expressed regret that Muhammad did not offer remorse or words for his victims as he faced execution Tuesday night. Witnesses say the 48-year-old convicted sniper was calm and emotionless as he entered the death chamber at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Virginia.

Dozens of family members of the Beltway Sniper's victims were present to watch the execution of the man who killed their loved ones during a three-week shooting rampage in October of 2002.

Milton Perry worked with Conrad Johnson, the final sniper victim. Johnson, a bus operator, was gunned down October 22, 2002.

"I took the call that morning when he got shot and i'm taking it personal," Perry said. "It could have been any of us."

Prosecutors say Muhammad and his teenaged accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo (news) , killed ten and wounded several more in their three-week reign of terror, forever changing the lives of many families and friends.

Prince William County (web | news) Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Ebert witnessed Muhammad's execution. Ebert was picked to prosecute Muhammad because of his success with previous capital cases, but Muhammad's execution was the first he personally witnessed.

"He died very peacefully, much more than most of his victims," Ebert said.

"There were many, many [victims' family members] here and all of them were seeking closure and wanted to see John Muhammad leave this earth," he added.

Gordon, Muhammad's attorneys, described his client in his final hours as fearless and still insisting he was innocent.

"Mr. Muhammad maintains his innocence in this case and he always has so he is not remorseful although he does extend his condolences to the families," Gordon said.
