UNION BRIDGE, Md. - ABC 7 News has learned a Maryland Marine has been killed in Afghanistan. Sergeant Charles Cartwright of Union Bridge, Maryland was killed during the weekend while serving in Afghanistan.

In the small, close-knit town of Union Bridge where patriotism is worn on its sleeve, grief and sorrow has taken over a community. Long time residents say losing 26-year-old Sgt. Charles Cartwright is heartbreaking.

"To lose one of your own ... especially personally, if you know them personally - its just devastating," said friend Darlene Harris.

This past weekend the well-known Marine was killed supporting combat operations in the Farah province in Afghanistan.

"It hurts everybody because they are our pride and joy," said retired veteran Joe Hernandez.

The towns firefighter family is especially mourning the loss. Sgt. Cartwright was the son of the current assistant fire chief. Tuesday night at the fire house, flags flew at half staff.

"For this to happened this week ... right before Veterans Day ... it just makes you appreciate what you have," a friend said.

Cartwright joined the Marine Corps on Sept. 10, 2001, trained in reconnaissance. He was promoted to sergeant three years ago.

Just three months ago, the owner of The Buttersburg Inn remembers serving the local hero one of his last meals before he was deployed.

"He was here with his new wife and parents they had lunch here," shared inn owner Frank Tunzi. "Everybody here is feeling it."
