Lowly Grizzlies, Timberwolves meet in Memphis

Memphis dropped its seventh straight game in Houston on Wednesday when Luis Scola led the way with 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Carl Landry added 20 points and Trevor Ariza donated 17, as the Rockets used a big second half to rout the hapless Grizzlies, 104-79.
The Grizzlies dropped their seventh straight decision despite 19 points from O.J. Mayo and 18 points apiece from Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph, who also added 10 rebounds in defeat.
Memphis' second overall selection in last June's NBA draft, UConn's Hasheem Thabeet, sat out with a fractured jaw while guard Allen Iverson continued his absence for personal reasons.
"I think they played stronger than us, tougher than us," said Memphis center Marc Gasol. "That's why they beat us. They played good team basketball."
Memphis is off to its worst start since losing eight of its first nine in 2005-06.
Minnesota is just as bad with a 1-9 mark thanks to a nine-game slide and is aiming for its first road win of the season (0-4). It suffered its ninth loss in a row since a season-opening win versus New Jersey by dropping an 89-77 decision to the Dallas Mavericks last night.
Rookie Jonny Flynn paced the Timberwolves with 11 points. Ryan Gomes tallied 10 points and nine rebounds for Minnesota, which got 10 points apiece from Nathan Jawai and Corey Brewer in defeat. The Wolves were without center Al Jefferson, who left on Thursday to tend to a family member's illness in Florida. He is also expected to miss the team's next game.
"I was pleased with the way our guys played for a good chunks of the ball game. With this team being young and inexperienced, they don't know how to dig deep when teams are making their runs. We don't know how to really execute our offense and work for high-quality shots when the differential is starting to increase," said Minnesota head coach Kurt Rambis.
The Wolves have won four straight over the Grizz, including two consecutive bouts in Memphis.
