GREENBELT, Md. - A former Prince George's County police officer and another man have been indicted for conspiracy to commit bank larceny and attempted robbery.

A federal grand jury indicted 41-year-old, former Prince George's County police officer Eddie Lee Smith, Jr. of Fort Washington, Maryland, and 53-year-old Earl Blake of Capitol Heights, Maryland.

According to court documents, on June 10, 2009, Smith and Blake allegedly cut telephone lines with a power saw at the SunTrust Bank on Old Branch Avenue in Temple Hills, Maryland to prepare for a break-in and attempted larceny of the bank. Smith then allegedly drove Blake to the bank in his marked police cruiser and waited for Blake to enter the bank with the saw while he waited in the police cruiser.

Court documents indicate that when Prince George's County firefighters arrived, Smith advised them to leave because he had checked the bank and it was secure. Blake allegedly ran from the bank and was briefly chased by Smith, who then returned to his car and left the area.

Blake was later arrested by other Prince George's County police officers.

If convicted, Smith and Blake face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for attempted bank larceny and five years in prison for the conspiracy.
