WASHINGTON - We all know how expensive going to the movies has become. But it may be even more costly to your health.
Fifteen years ago, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer organization, shocked the nation by revealing what was in that popcorn and soda. It's done it again.
CPSI says the two largest movie chains -- Regal and AMC -- have gone back to using coconut oil to pop their popcorn.
"Coconut oil is the worst thing movie theaters could be using to pop in because it is so bad for our hearts," said Jayne Hurley, CSPI's senior nutritionist. "It's 90 percent saturated, lard is 40 percent saturated."
The problem is that most Americans have no idea how much fat a typical combo meal contains.
A combo with medium unbuttered popcorn and medium drink contains 60 grams of saturated fat and 1,600 calories. That's like eating 36 strips of bacon plus 8 pats of butter, or a rack of ribs and a scoop of Haagen Dazs ice cream -- except that the popcorn has more fat than the latter option.
Those jumbo-sized candy packs are also health hazards. A 4.8 ounce package of Junior Mints plus a medium Regal drink contains the equivalent of 52 teaspoons of sugar.
Regal said it tried offering air-popped popcorn, but customers didn't like it. AMC declined to comment.
Tootsie Roll, the maker of Junior Mints, said each box contains several servings and that it's up to customers to decide how much they'll eat.
