WASHINGTON - We all know how expensive going to the movies has become. But it may be even more costly to your health.

Fifteen years ago, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer organization, shocked the nation by revealing what was in that popcorn and soda. It's done it again.

CPSI says the two largest movie chains -- Regal and AMC -- have gone back to using coconut oil to pop their popcorn.

"Coconut oil is the worst thing movie theaters could be using to pop in because it is so bad for our hearts," said Jayne Hurley, CSPI's senior nutritionist. "It's 90 percent saturated, lard is 40 percent saturated."

The problem is that most Americans have no idea how much fat a typical combo meal contains.

» read the study

A combo with medium unbuttered popcorn and medium drink contains 60 grams of saturated fat and 1,600 calories. That's like eating 36 strips of bacon plus 8 pats of butter, or a rack of ribs and a scoop of Haagen Dazs ice cream -- except that the popcorn has more fat than the latter option.

Those jumbo-sized candy packs are also health hazards. A 4.8 ounce package of Junior Mints plus a medium Regal drink contains the equivalent of 52 teaspoons of sugar.

Regal said it tried offering air-popped popcorn, but customers didn't like it. AMC declined to comment.

Tootsie Roll, the maker of Junior Mints, said each box contains several servings and that it's up to customers to decide how much they'll eat.

Jayne Hurley better get her facts straight. She based her "facts" from a study done 40 yrs. ago on partially hydrogenated oil. She should state this in the report. Movie theaters probably do use this form of coconut oil to make their popcorn. But making a general statement that,"Coconut oil is the worst thing movie theaters could be using to pop in because it is so bad for our hearts," is WRONG. She should clearly state "PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED COCONUT OIL"
In fact, extra virgin cold pressed coconut oils are great for you, great to cook in and although it is a saturated fat, it is a good fat that is used by the body for energy and is not stored as fat.

LOOK IT UP! Too bad you couldn't get this in before you play your report again at 5pm! I have been cooking with coconut oil for over 5 yrs. and my cholesterol hasn't been better! My HDL has raised to 70 and my LDL has lowered to 70.  Extra Virgin Coconut oil is a fantastic oil. It is also expensive, that is why I do believe movie theaters are using the Partially Hydrogenated version of it. PLEASE MAKE THAT CLEAR!
