(Sports Network) - Washington Redskins
(web | news) secondary coach Jerry Gray
is reportedly in line to take over as the next head football coach at the
University of Memphis.
Memphis fired Tommy West on November 9, but he's going to finish out the
season. The Tigers, who are 2-9, conclude the dismal campaign at Tulsa Friday
afternoon.
The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports Gray interviewed for the position
Tuesday and is emerging as the leading candidate to replace West. LSU
assistant Larry Porter, a former Memphis running back, is also reportedly in
the running for the job. Porter interviewed Friday, according to the
newspaper.
The 46-year-old Gray played for the Los Angeles Rams from 1985-91, the Houston
Oilers in 1992 and Tampa Bay in '93. A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Gray was
the defensive coordinator for Buffalo from 2001-05.
