Pollin Honored for Boosting Downtown D.C.

D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty proclaimed December 3rd, 2007, "Abe Pollin Day" in honor of Abe Pollin's 84th birthday and all of his contributions to the city.
Wizards owner Abe Pollin was honored for his work to revitalize downtown Washington with the Verizon Center.
Fenty was joined by Members of the D.C. Council and a representative from the Office of Majority Leader Steny Hoyer in recognizing Pollin. Hoyer stated, "Perhaps Abe's most lasting legacy will be his efforts to build what is now the Verizon Center and the accompanying neighborhood revitalization."
Pollin brought the Washington Wizards - originally the Baltimore Bullets - to the Washington area in 1973 after building the Capital Centre, and also secured an expansion franchise for the Washington Capitals.
Since the Verizon Center, originally called the MCI Center, opened 10 years ago Sunday, the 20,000-seat arena has been credited with sparking a massive redevelopment that led to downtown's rebirth as an entertainment center.
Pollin agreed to put up $200 million to cover construction of the project after the city was unable to foot much of the bill because of a financial crisis.
Verizon Center has seen recent improvements, including $10 million for a new scoreboard, and Pollin says he believes the building is the best in the country.
Comedian Bill Cosby was among those who will attend Monday's reception for Pollin at the arena.
