A new analysis shows the D.C. government could have lost more than $44 million in the past nine years because of an alleged fraud scheme involving employees in the city tax office. That's more than double the amount that prosecutors have declared to be missing.

The Washington Post analyzed city records and identified 160 checks totaling $44.3 million since June 1999 that lacked the court orders required for legitimate refunds. Federal authorities acknowledge they are still trying to determine the depth of the loss.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Harriette Walters, a mid-level manager at the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue is accused of approving illegal refunds and sharing the wealth with family members and associates. She and five others face federal charges in the case.

The city's chief financial officer says at least two and as many as four top leaders of the D.C. tax office, including its director, should have personally reviewed the refunds before they were issued.
