A lawyer who investigated the Enron scandal will examine the alleged D.C. tax refund scam, along with a top auditing firm.
The D.C. Council is expected to announce Tuesday that auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers and the law firm WilmerHale will conduct the inquiry at no charge. William McLucas, a lawyer with WilmerHale, will oversee the inquiry. He has investigated several corporate scandals, including Enron, and was a former enforcement chief at the Securities and Exchange Commission. McLucas said his firm wanted to get involved as a public service.
The auditors will wade through records to reveal how millions of dollars were stolen from the government.
D.C. Council chairman Vincent Gray said the investigation will lead to recommendations to help repair the tax office.
Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi is expected to announce the formation of a separate audit committee to help his office conduct its own review.
Sheldon Cohen, a former Internal Revenue Service commissioner, will serve as chairman of the audit committee.
