SpareMe
First my prayers to the families for their loss. I know it had to be hard and still is for them.

Now...Reduced by a day..so he can stay in the US. That is a bunch of bull. This man didn't follow the basic rules of having a drivers lic. He could have killed these two ladies if he was driving his personal car. Because he failed to look both ways.

Suing is going to happen because it involves a big company however $50 million. Come one now. This man didn't drive around and saw..there goes two..let me get them. Negelent yes, intentional no.

I must agree with James...WMATA stresses safety but it is a joke because it is only enforced by suspension (if that much). I say this as a WMATA employee. WMATA contracted Dupont as a safety consultant....this company has blown up more plants than any company in the history of the US. Dupont comes in and wants it all done "their way". Dupont is known for paint..not transportation!!! What can a paint company tell a transportation company..other than what color the breakrooms need to be!!

Sadly these families won't get much from WMATA because they are protected by laws AND it wasn't WMATA's fault, it was the drivers. The driver was properly trained and had a valid dr. lic. He was not over-worked, he had to pass all his drug testing. WMATA was in compliance.

In the event they do get a major judgement garenteed WMATA will pass it on to the customers..so it is lose for everyone even those that were not involved.

I feel for the surviving family members. A bus driver has a very important role in keeping his passengers safe and beware of pedestrians. Was he distracted by something going on in his life? I learned that this driver lost his wife a year or so before this accident. After the accident, his daughter committed suicide. He also lost a family, and probably doesn't have the fight for life in him. A lot of Metro drivers, just like police officers, are stressed, and those targeted as being under stress, should be pulled off the bus until they have been de-stressed.

This is sad all around. James, I sincerely offer my condolence to you and your family. I think the surviving family members of both women have every right to sue Metro and the driver in any way.

But - was this an accident? he admitted that he didnt look which is crazy for a public driver, especially when driving downtown. You have to watch for the pedestrians even if that means you sit. I dont think he intended to kill the women, he just made a very costly mistake of not looking carefully.

Metro busdrivers have a very serious job. i couldnt imagine having to drive for a living. you have others lives in your hands.

I am the brother of Sally McGhee, one of the women he killed.

To date WMATA has done nothing serious to prevent this from happening again, and sure enough it has. An annual safety lecture is a joke; the medical profession has been lecturing daily for decades about cigarette smoking, and if that had been successful no one would be left buying cigarettes in the US. Now the drivers are left with the message that if they kill a pedestrian, they will get off with 6 months. I could accept the terms of the plea agreement (He is only guilty of negligent homicide, while I think WMATA is guilty of murder.), but this is a nasty joke.

And by the way, my surviving sister and I are also suing WMATA. Not that that means much, since they are protected by law from any serious claims and financial damages. We can only sue for Sally's pain and suffering on February 14 and the financial loss to her estate due to her premature death.

Did I miss something? Was this driver drunk or on drugs? Did he have a prior record?

texangirl
I can't believe this person has been sentenced to prison for a tragic accident.

conundrum
gloria - do you honestly think willingly killing two innocent pedestrians is adequately punished by 6 months per life?

I think he is lucky that DC has no death penalty and this one year sentence is like winning the lottery.

HarleyFanNow
Six months in jail for each person run down and killed.

That makes me think that 6 months seems to be a pretty good deal to get rid of an evil mother-in-law.

This sentence is a disgrace.

guesswhat
Immigration status does not mean that he is an illegal. He can be a legan immigrant and still loose his status. I am not a mean person, but if somebody injures me of a loved one due to there negligence, I would make them suffer in the pockets, that does more damage than incarceration. Plus it takes money to bury a dead person and solve there financial affairs (death taxes, debts etc...).

gloria1107
Goodness, you all are really out for blood aren't you? Whatever they do or don't do will not bring back the two ladies and as long as this person never drives again and serves some time I think is punishment enough. I would say do the meanest thing possible if it would bring back the loved ones and carrying around a lot of hate just makes you old before your time. Would METRO hire an illegal?

Wowzer
That sentence is an insult to the victims, their families and the citizens of DC.

This is a disgrace. The prosecutor and judge should be impeached for incompetence and blatant stupidity.

2 families lost a loved one AND all this lawyer and the court care about is this criminals immigration status?

Shame Shame Shame.

Eboy
I doubt he has much in the way of assets. What is his immigration status, anyway?

Smurfy
Illegal or not, the immigrants are always trying to GET AWAY with committing crimes. That's why they need to be deported! He should've received more time than what he did. I don't blame one of the victim's husband for filing a lawsuit. He probably figured they weren't going to give this guy the time he should receive.

Prettyboy
Are you kidding me? A year for taking two lives and the topper is that his attorney doesn't want to affect his immigration status? I am outraged at this deal. This jerk on the roadways should be under the jail..

guesswhat
If he has any assests they can sue him too in a sarrogate law suit. I know I would..

Tuckmeister
And I hope he gets it!
