Lighting to Be Installed Near West Hyattsville Metro

In response to public safety concerns, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is preparing to install lighting along part of the Northwest Branch Trail near the West Hyattsville Metro station.
The commission will pay $100,000 for lights on a 350-foot section of the trail from the Metro station to the Queenstown Apartments in Mount Rainier. The project is expected to be done in about a year. Some jurisdictions want to keep the trails recreational, but more commuters are relying on the paths to get to work and school.
Brentwood Mayor Bettyjean Schmiedigen said commuters are encouraged to use public transportation or bicycles, but aren't given enough protection along trails when they do.
