In response to public safety concerns, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is preparing to install lighting along part of the Northwest Branch Trail near the West Hyattsville Metro station.

The commission will pay $100,000 for lights on a 350-foot section of the trail from the Metro station to the Queenstown Apartments in Mount Rainier. The project is expected to be done in about a year. Some jurisdictions want to keep the trails recreational, but more commuters are relying on the paths to get to work and school.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Brentwood Mayor Bettyjean Schmiedigen said commuters are encouraged to use public transportation or bicycles, but aren't given enough protection along trails when they do.

When I lived in that area I did not want to take that short cut even in the day time and so am glad they are going to get lights for the night time.
