A Rockville middle school teacher died as the result of complications from a MRSA infection.
The principal of Herbert Hoover Middle School, Billie-Jean Bensen, said Merry King died Sunday night.
King went into the hospital last week with a staph infection and family member said she died as a result of that illness.
The principal said there is no indication that King became infected at the school and no reason to think anyone at the school was at risk.
"It's been a real shock for all of us. She was supposed to spend the weekend with me up in New York."
Her daughter Charlotte Oliver does not how or where her mother contracted MRSA. It was a question that went unanswered at a PTA meeting at Herbert Hoover Middle in Potomac where King taught.
About two dozen parents and board members met with school leadership and county health officials. The purpose was to ease concerns about student safety.
As precaution, King's classroom was sanitized Monday night along with other communal areas with a bleach solution.
"I have the opinion from listening to all of these things it's a one in a million sort of event," said one parent who attended the meeting.
A support team comprised of psychologists, counselors and pupil personnel workers were helping the students and families in King's class.
King was absent from Hoover since November 30th and hospitalized shortly after that.
"As we mourn together, the loss of a wonderful teacher and friend, I know you join me in extending our heartfelt sympathy to Ms. King's family," said Bensen in a letter sent home to parents.
