Man Admits UVirginia-Area Rapes, Attacks

An Albemarle County man faces life in prison after pleading guilty to a series of rapes and sexual assaults in the Charlottesville area. Nathan Antonio Washington, 40, pleaded guilty Monday to two charges of rape and two charges of sexual assault - crimes linked by DNA evidence and implicating Washington.
For years, a task force of authorities had sought the serial rapist responsible for at least seven attacks dating to 1997. Information provided by one of the victims made Washington a top suspect, authorities said.
Police arrested Washington, who is married with four children, in August after a detective tested his DNA from a discarded soda cup to those in the sexual assaults.
As part of a plea deal, prosecutors have recommended a sentence of four life terms plus 20 years for a breaking and entering charge in connection with a 2004 sexual assault. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 26.
"Mr. Washington is not asking for forgiveness, though he hopes his decision to plead guilty to all charges will allow the process of healing to begin," defense lawyer Rhonda Quagliana read from a prepared statement after a hearing Monday in Charlottesville Circuit Court.
"Four life sentences is appropriate," Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney Jim Camblos said following the hearing.
The agreement also requires Washington, a grocery meat-cutter and former newspaper deliveryman, to admit to any other sexual assaults or rapes he has committed, though he will not face further charges, Charlottesville Commonwealth's Attorney Dave Chapman said in court.
