The Prince George's County Police have released the name of the police officer involved. It can be found on the web by doing a quick google search under "Brian C. Gray" for anyone who may be interested. They also said that the results of the investigation will determine further actions to be taken.

You know, I'm sure that Police Officer set out that morning thinking,I think I'll broadside a car today and see if I can kill someone as I'll bet Brian set off that Monday morning thinking I'll pull out from a stop sign and see if "SOMEONE" can broad side me and kill me. It was an "ACCIDENT" ! We are all such law abiding citizens that we "never" drive over the speed limits or drink and drive or flip the bird to someone that may be in your way going to slow........think about it !!!! Mary gave her son his first breathe of life and for reasons known only to her and the good Lord she got to give him his last. That doesn't make the pain any less and everyone is hurting here.Forget about how big or small the cars were, the speed limit or the weather........that's done, it is not going to change anything. Two families lives have changed forever.........say a prayer !!!!

How about we all leave the investigation to the lawyers that I am sure wil be involved. If any of you are experts of crown vics. then go ahead and do all of us that are greiving the favor of leaving your opinions in your head. I do not hate cops. I have many friends that are cops. Brian was going to be a cop. How about you guys let us think what we want. Death is a little more important that unnecessary bickering about whose fault it was. Think about all of the petty fights you get into everyday, and then take a second to ask yourselves if it is worth it. Leave it alone. It is not helping anyone. We are all here to offer our sympathies and pay respects to Brian. Do not question him anymore. I think you can find it in your hearts to give him that.

it has been stated on this site the force dynamics of a crown vic slamming a beretta .(a berreta is a rather small car) .it has also been noted in the news story that victim failed to yield to the officer's car .. the victim's car was hit in the side as the victims was TURNING .. he is, unfortunaley for the cop haters no way there's a bust for manslaughter against the driver of the CV .. whether it's a civilian like you and me or a cop .. and by the way .. I was in Pontiac Grand Am that was struck by Bronco on the passenger side during improper left turn rand the damage was similar to this accident .. cop at the scene told me that iwould have been killed if the impact was on the driver's rather than the right rear quarter .. and the bronco wasn't doing anything close to 45 .. even with the impoact in the rear ..I still had six broken ribs and a bunch more cracked along with a 1st degree flailed chest ..my fault initially, but she drifted from the fast lane and nailed me in the curb lane ... and the cop sed he believd that's what happened .. but we couldn't prove it .. (he didn't give me a ticket )

Everyone, make sure you know the facts before you place blame. If that cruiser was going 40 to 45 MPH (I bet you he was) he should be charged with vehicular manslaughter! Go look at the accident site and see how far the car was pushed. No way he was doing 25mph. If any of us were speeding and hit the cruiser pulling out in front of us we would have been taken away in handcuffs and our name would be released the minute after the accident. I?m tired of seeing the PG cruisers speeding through our area with our kids driving next to them. Set an example! My prayers go to Gray family, who also lost their father a few years ago.

Thanks for doing the math for all of us, Sheepdog. It is possible to die in a 25-mph crash, but it's likely that the officer was going faster. How much faster will determine if his actions contributed to the accident. Before we automatically blame him, how many of YOU actually go 25mph in a 25mph zone? Regardless of fault, this is a tragic loss of life.

Sheepdog
My sympathies to the family of the victim; like it or not, he was at fault. EVERYONE turning from a side street to main road MUST make sure it is safe to proceed before entering the roadway.

The end result of this crash is brought about by simple physics. A Ford Crown Victoria (CV) when loaded with police gear weighs about 4,900#, more in some cases, (trust me I've weighed one). A Chevy Beretta has a manufacturer's curb weight of 2,756#.

When the Beretta was made there was no NHTSA side impact crash testing or safety standard. Additionally in 1994-1995 some Berettas were made without a reinforcement panel in one of the rocker assemblies, reducing side impact protection. The Chevy was built to a safety standard over 10-years old and was struck in the weakest structural point. In this area there is no crumple zone and the striking vehicle is mere inches from occupants.

Look at the math: the CV is 4,900#, decelerates from 25 MPH (36.67 FPS) in a distance of approximately 8-feet (the width of the Beretta plus a little more). The formula for the amount of G-force in such a crash is: G=(S)^2/(30)(D). The impact generates 2.6G's, multiply weight by G and the CV exerts 12,760# on the Beretta. Up speed to 30 MPH and force rises to 18,375#.

A 2,756# car struck in its weakest point with forces up to 6-times its weight or more, is NOT going to fare well. The Beretta is going to suffer a significant amount of damage, consistent with what you see here. The lack of skid marks can be accounted for by one of two things: either the CV did not brake, or the ABS prevented skid marks.

It is time to face facts, Mr. Gray was driving a car that was at least 10-years old, weighed 2,000 pounds less, and was struck in an area that was the weakest part of the vehicle. Either way, this is a tragedy, but it would have the same ending if the striking vehicle were a civilian's SUV, pickup truck, or other large car.

@ vanative Typical department policy is that even in emergency status (lights and sirens) police officers are not allowed to go more than 10MPH over the speed limit. For that kind of damage to take place, 25mph has me thinking more like 50mph.

As far a PG Co officers not obeying the speed limit, about the only time I've ever seen a police cruiser going the speed limit here is if it says "State Trooper" on the back. PG cops do indeed drive as if they are above the law, routinely going well above the posted speed limit, only to in turn cite motorists for going 3-5MPH over it. Not to hijack the topic at hand, but just today I was coming back from the Vet's office (animal) on Route 4 and I saw an unmarked cruiser swerve in and out of traffic without his lights and sirens, only to be left as the 5-6th car back from a stop light. Rather than wait, he turns his lights on and expects the left-turning traffic (with right-of way via the stop light). No one stopped for him because they all saw and knew what he was doing. After he passed the light he turned his lights off and had to be going at least 90MPH because by the time the traffic at the light started moving, he was a dot in the distance.

There was a story a few months back, if that, where a Taxi cab hit a PGC police officer and killed him. I bet that Taxi driver is in jail for reckless endangerment and involuntary manslaughter. I also bet that this cop will return to work tomorrow if he hasn't already. Brian was a really good friend and it is really sad that the people we trust to protect our lives put the people we love in danger. I miss you, Brian. You were truly loved. Fly high.

madmomma - the intersection of Belair Dr/Beaverdale lane is nowhere near St. Piux catholic school on Rte 450...

My deepest sympathies go out to Ms. Gray. Brian's place of employment (TJ Elliott's in Bowie) is a regular meeting place for many local politicians - hopefully they will get involved & help Ms. Gray.

My heart goes out to this mother. What a horrific thing to have to witness. It is bad enough that she lost her son but to see the tragic event unfold. I had just taken my daughter to the local elementary school and noticed the accident scene. I went thru the K-Section to a back way that I know and the street that I was on put me right out past this accident. The damage to the victums car was MAJOR, I knew that someone must have been badly injured or lost their life. I said a short prayer and went on my way to work. I just can't understand why lately all we her of are tragic accidents where young people under 20's lives are taken. I am so sorry to anyone who knew this young man. I went to Bowie High back in the 1990's and went thru losing three friends in accidents. Never easy!!! I am not sure if justice will prevail on this accident baring the situation.

Eaglewatch
The mother needs to higher a lawyer and subpoena the cop's cell phone records and if the police cruiser was so equipped, the black box/gps info in it that would have recorded the current speed prior to impact.

No way that damage was caused by car going 25MPH.

I am so sorry for your pain in the loss of your beloved son. I do not know you but will have you in my prayers. May God's love comfort you and your family.

There is so much speeding at that intersection. People really come flying down that stretch of road. I almost got hit myself the other day. The police cruiser had to have been speeding to force that boy's car into the area across the street. If he had been obeying the speed limit he would not have hit him with enough force to kill him. Of course, as usual the police will help their own and cover it up. The officer should be punished for this terrible crime. He was wrong to be speeding and he killed someone. My heart goes out to the family.

This disturbs and angers me. I have watched police in VA set up speed trap after speed trap in very insignificant areas, only to watch THEM, the police, totally disregard any posted speed signs in the same areas where they place their traps. I have watched police from other Counties speed on local roadways where civilians are consistenly pulled over for breaking speed limits. And if you are a young driver, you are ALWAYS at fault. In an accident where one young driver was t-boned by an adult who admitted to being on medication and therefore not reacting properly, the young driver was at found at fault by the court. I have grown up respecting law officers. I have taught my children (now young adults) to respect law officers. I am now 44 years old and in the past year have LOST ALL RESPECT for law officers. They think they are above the law and do as little work as possible to make their pay. Sit on a road in near a police station around shift change time. See how many police cars observe the posted speed limit as they head back to the station for the end of the day, very few. My heart goes out to this mom and family. And I do not care if a Suburban hit a small car at 25 mph, the impact should not be enough to KILL any person involved. If this is the case, this country needs to do something about the safety of its automotive industy.

madmomma911
I could not agree with you more Marion Devaney! If he was going "only 25 miles an hour and applying his brakes" it could have been avoided or life ending injuries would have been avoided. Thank goodness ABC News 7 was there to listen to the mother's side unlike so many other of the news agencies who just took the police report as the truth. EVERYBODY WAKE UP! "THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES" I went past the accident site and the site of impact and where the car landed after impact is many, many feet in distance. I think it will be obvious that the off duty police officer flying down the road in a marked PG police care with no lights or sirens in an area close the St. Pius elementary school was going much much faster the "official PG statement" admits. Here again, is just one more example of PG county police department trying to cover up its mistakes.

gloria1107
I know of this family and I know that area and no way could it have been Brian's fault. The speed limit as stated is 25MPH. Brian had never had an accident before and it is so strange that this happened on Monday morning and it is just now making the news. I know PGC police will cover it up and to think Brian was going to college so he could be ONE OF THEM. My prayers go out to this lovely family.

Marion Devaney
This was a horrible tragic accident. My question is if the officer was only driving 25mph, the speed limit and paying attention, could this accident have been avoided? My wish and hope is that the Prince Georges Police Department will own this mistake made by one of it's officers.

SKEETER
If the facts stated in the story are true.....the P.G. cop was at fault.......and you can believe that he was going faster than 25mph to hit that car hard enough to kill the driver. ALso......5 to 1 he was on a cell phone and had his mind on something other than driving......this is usually why there are no skid marks......there is also the possibility that he just got off duty and had fallen asleep.........there is one thing you can take to the bank on this tragic accident.....the P.G. Police Dept WILL cover this up and by the trime they are done...the mother will feel as if she caused the accident.

Pooh30
The fog was so bad no one should have been driving 25 in that area. Isn't that what the police always tell us that the speed limit does not apply in bad weather. What a shame I feel for her.

holtonfb
aaahhh .. in case you haven't noticed .. a Crown Vic weighs a lot more than a Beretta .. and a side impact on the driver's side would whip-lash the victim's head off the side window.. and that's even if the cop was only doing 25 .......

Remy
someone was going above the posted speed limit. My condolences to his mom. This must be a nightmare for her to see her child die in an instant.

MCA
The most disturbing issue of this story, other than the death of the young man, is that the speed limit was 25 MPH. How should that be a fatal accident?
