Hagerstown Seeks to Delay Hiring of Firefighters
posted 10:32 am Wed December 12, 2007 - Hagerstown, Md.
Hagerstown City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman is asking the City Council to postpone the proposed hiring of nine additional city firefighters.
City Councilman Lewis Metzner is pressing for the firefighters to be hired by Feb. 1 but Zimmerman wants discussion of the issue postponed until April. He said the city should know by then if the state legislature plans to cut state aid to the city. According to city records, each new firefighter would cost the city nearly $60,000 annually in salary and benefits.
Metzner said the current budget already included money for the positions and believes the new firefighters are needed because the city has grown.
