Metro Ridership Declining in Virginia
posted 10:19 am Thu December 13, 2007 - Alexandria, Va.
The Metro transit system is grappling with growing ridership.
But some suburban stations are actually seeing a decline in passenger trips. Documents prepared by the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and obtained by WTOP Radio show that 12 of Virginia's 20 rail stations saw a drop in weekday passenger trips between Metro's 2006 and 2007 fiscal years. Metro's fiscal year begins in July.
According to the documents, some of the largest declines came at end-of-the-line stations in Vienna and Franconia-Springfield. Those stations saw a combined 285,000 fewer trips. Altogether, ridership numbers in Virginia were down more than 430,000.
Three out of the four Metro stations in Alexandria saw weekday ridership declines. There also were declines at five of the 11 stations in Arlington and four of the five stations in Fairfax County.
Metro is preparing to vote on a fare increase Thursday, which some fear will drive more suburban riders away.
