Cars Targeted in D.C. Complex

D.C. firefighters snuffed out seven car fires in one southwest complex early Thursday morning and arson investigators suspect foul play was behind the blazes.
It happened at the 700 unit gated complex, The Wingate, around 1:30 a.m. The area has had a lot of problems with vehicle theft and vandalism, but residents said they were awakened to the sounds of car alarms and explosions as fuel tanks blew up. As Howard University student La'Tricia Pearson went over the wreckage of her SUV, she gave her reaction in a word. "Rage, this is ridiculous. You know, we're supposed to have 24 hour [security]."
Fire officials believe someone set at least one vehicle on fire and the flames quickly spread to others.
"I woke up his morning, sound of boom, fire and everything... looked and we watched our cars burn. There was nothing we could do," said resident Donna Pearson. "It's crazy to me. It's demonic. It's crazy. That's how I feel."
Seven vehicles were consumed by the fire. Residents became angrier, they said, because this is just the latest in a series of incidents at the complex. It seems car thieves and vandals target the place and last May, smashing windshields of vehicles with anti-theft devices.
"You have to park your car in the street because you're scare to park it in the lot," said resident Clyde Rispus.
La'Tricia Pearson said when her sister from Kentucky visited, her car was vandalized. "If I known it was going to be like this, I would never ever have moved into this high rise. I just wouldn't have done it."
