Metropolitan Police Officer Brian Bobick has been upgraded to fair condition at Washington Hospital Center.

Bobick was injured when on bicycle patrol with a second officer in the 4200 block of Ord St., NE.  The two officers were about to stop a group of people in an alley when they heard a vehicle gun its engine.  The officers turned to see a black Cadillac pointed at them.

"It just charged toward them at a high rate of speed," said D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier. "The fact that someone intentionally ran down these officers is very disturbing."

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Lanier said Ofc. Bobick pushed the other officer out of the way before he was struck. The other officer was not injured.

"He was just quick thinking and he saved his partner's life," added Chief Lanier. Ofc. Bobick was flown by helicopter to Washington Hospital Center's MedStar trauma unit. Dr. Janis Orlowski said the officer suffered "extensive facial fractures [and] extensive trauma to his face."

Bobick regained consciousness Friday afternoon. He had been unconscious since arriving at the hospital Thursday night.

The Metropolitan Police Department arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with the incident.

Investigators said the boy was picked up about 4:00 a.m. Friday and interviewed overnight. Charges are still pending.

Police said officers found the stolen vehicle about 10 minutes later in the 4400 block of Quals Street. Lanier said the vehicle had been stolen about a week ago.

Chief Lanier said witnesses in the neighborhood came forward to identify the 15-year-old suspect, who was taken into custody in the same neighborhood.

Police sources told ABC 7/NewsChannel 8 reporter Jennifer Donelan that the suspect admitted he was trying to kill the second bicycle officer. The boy allegedly told his interrogators that he "should've gotten their guns." Detectives are checking to see if there was another person in the vehicle.

"We have not yet confirmed that that there was another person in the car, but there is a possibility there was so we are still looking to question one more person," said Chief Lanier.
