Loudoun County Could See Tax Hike
posted 6:03 am Fri December 14, 2007 - Leesburg, Va.
Loudoun County school officials are seeking a hefty increase in spending even as the county is facing a big deficit.

The result could be a large increase in property taxes. County officials have projected a deficit next year of as much as $251 million at the current tax rate of 96 cents for every $100 of assessed value. The estimate drew gasps and murmurs from county board members when it was unveiled Wednesday night.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Part of the gap is the result of a slowdown in the housing market. But a large chunk is a $117 million increase in spending proposed by Superintendent Edgar Hatrick.

Hatrick expects more than 3,000 students to be added to the system next year. He also said more spending is needed to bring Loudoun schools up to the level of rival counties such as Fairfax.

Loudon County...Hello...if you do not have enough funds to run gov't and the cause is related to the slowing or almost stopped housing market you do not punish the current residents by raising taxes. You cut spending. The housing market is not going to bounce back for years. This is a perfect example of gov't being stupid and trying to keep up with the next door neighbors (Fairfax).
