D.C. police say detectives have closed four intertwined homicide cases, including the murders of a young mother and her four-year-old son in a Southeast apartment building. Turkessa Branch, 30, and her son Darius were gunned down October 25. Investigators believe they were killed by 28-year-old Raymond Carpenter over a $100 debt.
Carpenter was himself gunned down a few weeks later, on November 17 on Buena Vista Terrace, SE.
Detectives believe Darius McKeever, Branch's boyfriend and the father of four-year-old Darius, tracked down and killed Carpenter to avenge the deaths of his loved ones. McKeever was arrested Thursday and charged in Carpenter's murder.
Police said Friday Carpenter was two days from being arrested for the murders of the mother and her son. They say McKeever's alleged actions only added to the family's pain.
"We weren't afford an opportunity to bring Raymond Carpenter to justice, and now Mr McKeever faces charges another tragedy for his family," said Inspector Rodney Parks of MPD's Violent Crimes Branch.
Police also suspected Carpenter in the September 29, 2007 murder of David Best in the 4800 block Alabama Avenue, SE. Police closed that case administratively with Carpenter's death.
