Parking Spots Disappear as More Buildings Get Driveways

If it seems like there are fewer and fewer parking spots in D.C. every year, it's not your imagination. It turns out D.C. gives away hundreds of spaces every year. This year alone, the city lost more than 400 on-street parking spaces. Most of them were in high density neighborhoods in Northwest and downtown.
Curb cuts - commonly known as driveways - are the culprits.
According to documents provided to WTOP radio by D.C. transportation officials, the city approved more than 200 requests for curb cuts in the past year. A curb cut is where a driveway connects with the road. Each one equals two parking spaces.
Ward Three Council member Mary Cheh says it's a big problem. She says the city needs improvements to its permitting process.
But new driveways aren't the only things eating up parking. The city has given nearly 100 parking spaces to car-sharing companies and plans to give them more.
