An off-duty D.C. firefighter is dead following a multiple vehicle crash in College Park Saturday afternoon.
Prince George's County authorities responded to the intersection of University Boulevard and Rhode Island Avenue around 3:18 p.m.
Accident reconstruction teams believe 44-year-old Lawrence Borders, Sr. was travelling northbound in a black Chrysler convertible along Rhode Island Avenue when he was struck by an allegedly drunk driver in a tan Ford Bronco travelling westbound on University Boulevard.
Borders' convertible then spun out of control striking a third car sitting at a traffic light on the southbound lanes of Rhode Island Avenue.
The driver and the passenger in the third vehicle were not injured.
The intersection was closed in both directions for several hours while police conducted their investigation. An accident reconstruction unit discovered several boxes of beer bottles in the back of the Ford Bronco. The bottles and contents were taken into police custody.
Fire officials on scene tell ABC 7/NewsChannel 8's John Gonzalez that Borders was a 16-year veteran firefighter and worked with D.C.'s Hazmat unit. Borders was a member of Engine 12 in Northeast.
D.C. Main Fire Dispatch said station flags with be flown at half-mast in memory of Borders.
