'Safer' Cigarettes for Maryland?
posted 5:07 am Mon December 24, 2007 - Baltimore
One of the major tobacco companies is pledging to speed the introduction of its self-extinguishing cigarettes in Maryland.
Philip Morris USA will sell the cigarettes starting April 1, three months before the sales will be required by state law. The cigarettes are less likely to cause fires if left unattended. City officials in Baltimore said 16 residents have died in fires caused by cigarettes this year. City health commissioner Dr. Joshua Sharfstein said it's possible the earlier start to the sale of the safer cigarettes will save lives.
Mayor Sheila Dixon calls the Philip Morris decision "a step in the right direction," and she's urging other tobacco companies to make the same commitment.
