Residents displaced by a fire Friday at a Greenbelt apartment complex moved into vacant units at the complex Monday while others were still at a local hotel.
About 60 people living at the Springhill Lake apartment complex were given temporary shelter at a College Park motel. "Right now, I still don't comprehend the fact that we lost everything everything yet," said displaced resident Krista Mason.
Prince George's County officials have been working with apartment management to furnish vacant apartments with cots and other furniture.
"It's good because the kids can have some sort of Christmas." A party was held, hosted by local firefighters with gifts of toys, clothes and even shopping cards.
"Mainly, I'm just thankful that somebody actually is trying to do something," said Manuel Rodriguez.
Firefighters said a Christmas celebration is good for everyone. "Just seeing the smile on some of the kids faces here Monday has been a worth it. I think its been good for our fire folks as well," Chief Chuck Fusco from the Berwyn Heights Volunteer Fire Department.
Jim Thornberg donated $200 to help out the fire victims. "There's a need, you know, and hate to see families suffer this time of year."
"It's just sinking in day by day, but by all God's graces, it's going to be fine."
