D.C. police are investigating an officer-involved shooting.

The shooting happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. Friday in the 1100 block of 1st Terrace, NW.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the officer was "lucky to be alive" after being attacked by a group of suspects during an undercover drug operation around the area of New York Avenue and North Capitol Street, NW. Lanier said the officer shot a suspect in the shoulder while he was being kicked and punched by the group.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?The 19-year-old suspect and the officer were taken to an area hospital.  Police said the suspect was conscious and breathing.

Police are still investigating.
