Montgomery County Cuts the Fat
posted 10:43 am Wed January 02, 2008 - Bethesda, Md.
Trans fats are on their way out in Montgomery County restaurants. Beginning Tuesday, restaurants will have to stop using margarines, frying oils and other food products that contain more than one-half gram of trans fat per serving.
Next year, oils and spreads will have to be trans fat free, as will baked goods and prepared dishes. A total ban on trans fats goes into effect in 2010.
Montgomery is the first jurisdiction in the Washington area to place limits on trans fats, which have been linked to health problems. Cities like New York and Philadelphia already have their own bans in place.
Restaurant owners say they will have to spend more to replace items on their menus, like switching from margarine to butter.
