Deposition of Clerk in Special Session Lawsuit Postponed

A deposition of the chief clerk of the House of Delegates has been postponed in a legal case seeking to invalidate last month's special session. Mary Monahan had been scheduled for a 4 p.m. deposition in Easton Monday with lawyers representing Republicans.
But the deposition has been put off after lawyers for the attorney general's office filed with the state's highest court seeking to block it, citing legislative privilege.
Raquel Guillory, a spokeswoman for the attorney general, says the deposition has been put off until at least Wednesday or Thursday.
Attorneys representing Republicans say the Senate violated the constitution by adjourning too long without permission from the House. They want to question Monahan, who records House proceedings, about records kept during the session.
The session resulted in more than $1.3 billion in tax increases, many of which go into effect this week.
