A heart-breaking event for any pet owner after the dog of two men in Northwest D.C. ran away five days ago, after being attacked by another dog and hasn't been seen since. The owners say they visit the pound everyday looking for Jack, a six-year-old beagle. From a baby monitor outside the door in case he comes sniffing back to posters all over the neighborhood, Chris Gonazales and Dan Murray say all that's left of their beloved pet is his leash and collar. "Our dog panicked and slipped his collar and ran off. It wasn't until he was two blocks away, I was still holding onto the leash and I thought I still had him," said Murray.

The owners said it happened the day after Christmas when Murray was walking Jack as a neighbor boy was walking his dog, Raven, when he jerked loose. After that, there as mayhem and each side has their own version of the story.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Murray claims, "The kid jumps on me and pushes me to the ground and started pounding on my shoulders and back saying, 'Get off my dog. Get off my dog.'"

Fourteen-year-old George Thompson Jr. said he and trying to catch Raven and the neighbor was kicking Raven. "He lied to the police about me beating him up and I did not lay a hand on that man."

After the chase, Towana Thompson said she found Raven three blocks away and got her in the car, but no one's seen Jack since. Towana said, "I do hope they find their dog."

Police were involved in the incident, but the teen was not charged with assault, though Murray said he may file his own charges. Police did find George Thompson Sr., the teen's father, $25 for Raven's leash being out of hand.

"He's a great dog and it would just be unjust because of some kid's action and because a community doesn't know how to react," said Gonzales.

-- When walking your dog, the leash should never be attached to the collar with your dogs information on it for exactly the reasons described in these incidents. I put a harness on my Wire Fox Terriers EVERY time I take them out of my yard for any reason and I also have a quick-connect collar that snaps on and off in approx 2 seconds. That quick-connect collar has all the information on it and it is never connected to the leash.

Those of you who insist on attaching your leash to a collar should have 2 collars on your dog. The cost of an extra collar is approx $10 and you will never be sorry for making that tiny additional investment in your dog.

Dogs can slip all sorts of collars but you can at least make sure their contact information stays with them. The collar with the information does not have to be tight because it is not being used to restrain the dog.

I do this in addition to having them both microchipped.
