NEW CARROLLTON, Md. - Top auto executives warn the economy could spin into a Depression if Congress doesn't bail them out of financial problems.
Chrysler executive Jim Press made his pitch Wednesday afternoon at a local dealership in New Carrollton. The DARCARS Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge dealership served as the backdrop for a high-profile rally.
Press energized local and regional car leaders, a day before the Big Three Detroit auto executives testify before Congress. They will ask for approximately $34 billion in aid to prevent the automotive giants from suffering a collapse.
Press said the nation's economic crisis has been devastating on an industry that is vital to the livelihoods of millions of Americans. "This isn't about Wall Street," Press said. "[It's the] manufacturing base in America."
Press and other executives from General Motors and Ford have also changed their approach for the round two of bailout talks.
Last month, they were criticized for jetting to Congressional hearings. This time, the executives drove all the way from Michigan in fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles. They will call on Congress to say that helping the Big Three will in turn, help many more.
