(Sports Network) - Mike Modano scored the game-winner in the shootout as the Dallas Stars downed the Colorado Avalanche, 2-1, at American Airlines Center.

With the shootout tied after the first three rounds, Modano skated in on net and fired a wrister over the glove of Peter Budaj and underneath the crossbar.

Ryan Smyth had the last chance for Colorado, but Marty Turco made a pad save on Smyth's low backhand shot for the win.

Toby Petersen scored the lone goal while Turco finished the game with 26 saves for the Stars, who have won three of four.

"In the short term, if you get on a streak or start collecting points with regularity, it certainly helps," said Turco. "This team has been playing tighter, better and more together."

Marek Svatos lit the lamp while Budaj made 23 saves in the loss for the Avalanche, who have dropped their last two games.

"It was a big game, I think overall we played well, we played well defensively," said Svatos.

The big news involving Dallas on Friday involved forward and NHL loud-mouth Sean Avery, who was suspended six games, without pay, for comments he made on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old forward, who has also agreed to seek professional anger- management evaluation and, if necessary, structured counseling in light of his recent antics, was suspended indefinitely by the NHL after he made comments in reference to Flames' defenseman Dion Phaneuf, who is currently dating Avery's ex-girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert.

Avery met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, along with other league officials on Thursday before an official decision was made.

He will not be eligible to play again until December 16 against Phoenix.

Neither side was able to get on the board in the first period as Budaj stopped eight shots while Turco made seven saves at the other end.

Dallas got on the board at the 7:57 mark of the second as Modano threw a shot on net from the top of the right circle and Petersen tipped it past Budaj for a 1-0 lead.

Turco needed to make just six saves in the second period to keep the shutout going.

It appeared that Dallas was going to hang on for the win, but Colorado tied the game with 55.5 seconds left on the clock. With Budaj on the bench for the extra attacker, Paul Stastny flipped a backhand saucer pass from behind the net to the front where Svatos chipped it in.

It was a nice pass and I just tried to shoot high and it went in," said Svatos about the goal. "It was a big tying goal close to the end of the game."

Game Notes

Colorado plays in Vancouver on Sunday...Dallas has off until Wednesday when it will host Phoenix...Both teams had three power play chances in the game, but neither were able to take advantage...Modano is 6-for-18 in shootout chances.
