WASHINGTON - Police are now investigating a shooting that left one man dead Monday night at the intersection of 4th Street and V Street Northwest, about a block from Howard University's campus.
The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. Shortly afterward, police officers from the Third District arrived at the scene and observed a black male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as 20-year-old David Christopher Holmes.
D.C. resident Theresa Price heard the commotion, rushed out of her apartment and saw what appeared to be a male teenager wounded in a nearby alley. "All I heard was boom, boom, boom, boom," Price said.
"I don't know if it was a neighborhood kid or what, but it really hurt me. People don't love you on these streets they will hurt you real bad," Price added.
Police said the victim was not a Howard University student and the crime is not linked to a rise in shootings that have occurred in the past week.
"We don't really have an exact motive or know exactly what occurred that led up the shooting at this point," noted Commander George Kucik of the Metropolitan Police Department (web | news) .
Police report there have been other similar crimes in the area recently. "So it's an area where there have been some shootings," noted Kucik. "There have been a couple here in the last couple months."
Police are asking anyone who has information regarding the shooting to call the tip line at 1-888-919-CRIME, text to 50411. or call the Command Center at 202-727-9099.
