Wilson Bridge, Va. - Fairfax police are reporting that an early morning crash on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge started with a police chase that began just before 5:00 a.m.
The chase began in the 8200 block of Richmond Highway, where a woman left her car running in front of the 7-11. The suspect, a 43-year-old man, jumped into the car and drove away.
Police issued a message about the stolen vehicle, a 1989 Volkwagen, and a Fairfax County
(web | news) officer spotted in northbound on Route 1 near Huntington Avenue and requested backup. When those backup units arrived, they attempted to get the suspect to pull over.
The suspect kept driving, and the police used a move called the Precision Immobilization Technique, in which an officer deliberately brings a police cruiser into contact with a suspect's vehicle attempting to force him to pull over.
The chase finally ended on the northbound Route 1 ramp to the outer loop of the Beltway. Police report that a third vehicle was involved in the crash, a van with a driver and a passenger, but do not specify how that vehicle was involved or whether the suspect or officers collided with the van.
No injuries were reported to the van occupants or any of the police officers. The suspect was arrested and taken to Inova Fairfax hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
No information about the suspect has been released, and charges are currently pending.
