CHEVERLY, Md. - Police say a 78-year-old man was shot and killed by his grandson inside his Prince George's County home. The shooting happened in the 6300 block of Kilmer Road in Cheverly.

Around 11 a.m., police entered the home and found the grandfather and grandson inside. Police say the grandson, who is in his twenties, shot and killed his grandfather. Then he turned the gun on himself but was unsuccessful in killing himself.

The grandson is now at a local hospital. The grandson is in extremely critical condition.

Few people knew the elderly man who lived in the house. "I didn't know him. I see him," said neighbor Patsy Rodriguez.

One neighbor did hear the gunshots. "It was kind of like pop, pop, pop, that's it. I definitely identified them as shots," said Sheree Myers. But she said she didn't get to call police because she heard them already on the way.

One person said the younger man had started staying with his grandfather recently.  According to law enforcement sources, the grandson had recently quit taking his medication for his bipolar disorder. He had made statements that he wanted to die.

All day, police took bags of evidence from the home, including a computer hard drive.
