Cherry Blossom Festival 2012: 100 years of cherry blossoms
This year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates 100 years. The gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees from Japan in 1912 honors the lasting friendship between the two countries. Here's a look at the celebration through the ages.
The City of Tokyo presented cherry tree saplings to the City of Washington, D.C. in 1912. The annual display of cherry blossoms in D.C. is the result of Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki's persistence in furthering this project. This photo shows Mayor Ozaki and his wife.
