Cherry Blossom Festival 2012: 100 years of cherry blossoms

This year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates 100 years. The gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees from Japan in 1912 honors the lasting friendship between the two countries. Here's a look at the celebration through the ages.

First Lady Helen Taft, wife of President William Howard Taft, supported planting cherry blossom trees. She and the wife of the Japanese ambassador planted the first two trees.
