Police Week: Fallen officers honored at 24th annual vigil in D.C.

Thousands of police officers from across the country lit candles to honor their fallen comrades at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Judiciary Square Sunday night.

The 24th annual vigil is part of Police Week, formed nearly 50 years ago when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation creating Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15. On that date, the U.S. flag is flown at half-mast and the calendar week surrounding it is designated Police Week.
