Satellite Data Implemented Into Forecast Models

The Suomi NPP polar-orbiting satellite was launched into space in October 2011. It circles the Earth at 512 miles above the surface. The temperature and atmospheric moisture data the satellite collects once every 102 minutes is now being incorporated into forecast models. Meteorologists started using this data in May to help in weather prediction.
