Tufa towers on Mona Lake

Mono Lake California is a highly alkaline lake formed about 76,000 years ago. The lake has no outlet and evaporation of the lake's water and high concentration of calcium carbonate forms what are called tufas in and around the lake. Alkali flies and brine shrimp (Artemia monica) thrive on the high alkalinity of the lake. Photo by Cindy Todd
