PHOTOS: The year the U.S. Capitol Dome turned red

The U.S. Capitol Dome underwent major repairs and restoration from late 1959 until 1960. Workmen used pneumatic hammers to remove paint from the iron dome which was then sandblasted. A red protective rust inhibiting coating had to be placed on the dome within five hours of paint removal to prevent rusting.
