Bethesda robberies: 14-year-old charged in four burglaries, two attempted ones

Trying to bust an alleged teenage burglar? Yes, there's apparently an app for that.

Montgomery County Police say that a 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a string of robberies in a Bethesda neighborhood, and detectives say the tracking software led police to a missing phone, and subsequently the suspect.

The path to finding the suspect began on May 9, when the resident of a home in the 5000 block of Keokuk Street in Bethesda reported that his home had been burglarized. One of the items that had been stolen was an iPad, which was tracked down using the "Find My iPad" app.

After nailing down the location of the tablet computer at the suspect's home, police were able to arrest the boy.

Upon further investigation, detectives say the 14-year-old admitted to committing four other burglaries and another attempted burglary. The crimes occurred between May 1 and May 10 on Greenway Drive, Little Falls Drive, Westport Road, Keokuk Street and Brookdale Road in Bethesda.

Furthermore, police say the bicycle the boy was using while committing the burglaries was stolen as well.

Jose Molina arrested, accused of selling $20,000 of stolen goods

The owner of a Howard County store is under arrest Tuesday and stands accused of trying to sell about $20,000 worth of stolen goods, but he told ABC 7 that "he doesn't care" if the items he had in his store were illegally obtained.

Prince George's County organized retail crime detectives say that Jose Molina, who owns a store in Elkridge, made his place of business a "one-stop shop" for stolen goods.

"He was bringing in stolen stuff, buying it and giving orders to the boosters, telling them what items he preferred," Prince George's County Police Sgt. Aubrey Thompson said.

Molina, though, says the cops have it all wrong, despite Thompson saying that police sold items to him that they clearly indicated were stolen. The items, some of which still had stickers from Target on them, included razors, shampoo, hair coloring, air fresheners and Tide detergent.

He said he had receipts for everything in the store, but when he couldn't produce ones from Target department stores, he claimed that police took them. Detectives say he didn't have any invoices for any of the stolen goods.

"Nothing from Target, that's a lie," Molina said. "Nothing has a sticker from Target. Nothing from Target. Nothing from CVS."

Detectives also took a stack of navigation systems, at least three of which have been linked to car thefts in the District and Montgomery County. Molina says that he has no way to know if they were stolen, and he didn't seem to mind if they were.

"My business buys and sells," he said. "I don't care."

Gary Giordano arrested for indecent exposure

Gary Giordano, the Maryland man suspected of killing Robyn Gardner in Aruba in 2011, was arrested in Annapolis last Friday for indecent exposure after he was caught allegedly having sex with a woman in a vehicle.

Annapolis Police say Giordano was caught allegedly having sex with a woman in a Cadillac Escalade on May 18 while parked in a garage near City Dock. The garage sits just blocks from the Maryland State House and the U.S. Naval Academy.

"They said they saw two people, so I went up to check it out, and I saw enough to know it wasn't kosher," Frank, the parking attendant who found the couple says. "Just saw enough to know that they weren't clothed.”

The woman with Giordano was also taken into custody. According to charging documents, Giordano could face up to three years in prison and/or a $1,000 fine.

Giordano declined to be quoted about the allegations when reached by phone Tuesday.

"While we recognize that Mr. Giordano enjoys an infamous reputation, the Annapolis arrest was simply a matter of effective police work in response to citizen complaints," Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop said in a statement.

Authorities initially got reports of a man and woman "cuddling" in the back of the Escalade on the second deck of the parking structure.

However, when officers arrived, they say they discovered Giordano and Carol Ann Bock on a mattress in the rear cargo area of the vehicle, lying down and partially covered by a blanket. Police say they saw both Giordano and the woman nude through a window.

Police ordered the pair out of the vehicle. While Goridano was getting out of the Escalade, he knocked his black underwear from the vehicle, police say.

Both were taken into custody and charged with indecent exposure.

"Indecent exposure and other offensive conduct are intolerable," Chief Pristoop said.

An employee of the parking garage told police that several passerbys had complained about the alleged activity in the vehicle. When the employee went to investigate, he saw Giordano and the woman “cuddled together” and could see that Giordano was naked, according to a police report.

Giordano was held in Aruba for several months on suspicion of involvement in the presumed death of 35-year-old Gardner of Frederick.

Her body has not been found. Giordano denies wrongdoing and says Gardner was swept out to sea while snorkeling. He never was officially charged with a crime in connection to Gardner's disappearance.

Dennis Mackabee arrested in Frank Amobi murder

Montgomery County Police officials say they've made an arrest in the murder of a 24-year-old man in White Oak last December.

On Dec. 27, 2011, Franklin Amobi, a 24-year-old Silver Spring man and a popular local rapper nicknamed "Frank Diggy," was shot and killed near a bus stop in the 11400 block of Stewart Lane. On Tuesday, police say that Dennis Mackabee, 29, had been detained in connection with the killing.

Mackabee is being held without bond.

Police say that on the day Amobi was shot, he was outside his apartment and involved in a drug transaction with Mackabee and two other people. Police received information about Mackabee's involvement in the transaction and the shooting on May 11, officials say.

He was subsequently arrested at a family member's home in Chevy Chase.

As the search for his shooter went on, Amobi's friends and family distributed fliers and continued to get the word out about the case.

"Somebody has to know something. This neighborhood is too small, too close. Somebody needs to speak up," one of Amobi's friends, identified as Sharaya, told ABC 7 this past April.

Takoma Park Police say that at about 5:15 p.m. on May 21, the victim was walking home from a school bus stop on Glenside Drive near Anne Street when she was stopped by a Hispanic man in his mid 20s. Police say the man then demanded property from the girl and threatened her with an unknown weapon.

When the victim refused, police say he man slashed at her arms with the weapon. In defense, the girl swung her backpack at the suspect, knocking him down and allowing her to flee home. She was not seriously injured.

Thomas Gore pleads guilty to campaign violations

WASHINGTON (AP) - In a case that revealed underhanded tactics used to get Vincent Gray elected mayor of Washington, a former Gray campaign aide pleaded guilty Tuesday to funneling campaign funds to another mayoral candidate and shredding records of the transactions.

Thomas Gore admitted in U.S. District Court that he converted excessive or unattributed cash contributions to Gray's 2010 campaign into money orders that were then filled out by another party and given to Sulaimon Brown, a minor candidate. The payments were intended to keep Brown in the race so that he could continue making negative comments about then-mayor Adrian Fenty as he sought reelection, Gore acknowledged.

The 56-year-old Gore, a longtime friend of Gray's and the acting treasurer for the campaign, also admitted that he lied to the FBI about having shredded a spiral notebook in which he kept records of the payments to Brown. He further revealed that he was caught in the lie when confronted with wiretap evidence.

Brown has long maintained that he was paid by Gray's campaign and promised a job in the Gray administration in exchange for his harsh rhetoric about Fenty. He alleged that Gray was aware of the payments, which the mayor denies. Brown was appointed to a $110,000-a-year city government job in January 2011, shortly after Gray took office, and fired after less than a month.

"In 2010, the voters of the District of Columbia were deceived," U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen said in a statement. "Envelopes stuffed with fraudulent money orders prevented the public from knowing that one mayoral campaign was secretly financing the campaign of an opposing candidate."

Gore pleaded guilty to a felony obstruction-of-justice charge for the attempted cover-up and three misdemeanors of making a contribution in the name of another person. The money orders contained the names of people who did not contribute to the Brown campaign.

Federal sentencing guidelines call for him to receive 12 to 18 months in prison, although prosecutors could seek a reduction in the event of "substantial cooperation" with investigators. Because of the ongoing probe, no sentencing date was set.

Gore and his attorney, Frederick Cooke, declined to comment after the hearing. Gray's spokesman deferred comment to the mayor's attorney, who could not be reached and has repeatedly declined to comment about the investigation.

Gray, 69, defeated Fenty by 10 percentage points in the 2010 Democratic primary, tapping into widespread dissatisfaction with a mayor widely perceived as aloof. Gray also touted himself as the more ethical candidate, criticizing Fenty for steering lucrative government contracts to his college fraternity brothers. Voters split along racial and socioeconomic lines, with Gray carrying poorer, majority-black sections of the city by wide margins while Fenty fared well in wealthier neighborhoods.

Several Gray campaign staffers have said Brown's attacks on Fenty at candidate forums amounted to a sideshow that did nothing to help Gray get elected.

According to a document outlining Gore's actions, which he acknowledged in court was accurate, Gore and another Gray campaign staffer agreed in June 2010 to start funneling money to Brown. Although the other campaign staffer was identified in the document only as "Person A," records of the money-order contributions indicate that person was Howard Brooks, a Gray campaign consultant. Brooks has not been charged.

Although the guilty plea only covered three money orders, Gore acknowledged converting cash given to the Gray campaign into five money orders worth a total of $660. Three of those were in the name of Brooks' son, Peyton Brooks, and two others contain the names of a relative of Howard Brooks and a friend of Peyton Brooks.

The documents indicate that Howard Brooks handed the money orders to Brown, which is consistent with Brown's account of the payments.

Gore also acknowledged that he met with Howard Brooks last September to discuss the investigation. Gore told Brooks during that meeting that he shredded his records of payments to Brown after The Washington Post reported Brown's allegations in March 2011.

When U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly quoted Gore's statements from the meeting with Brooks and asked if they were accurate, Gore said, "That was a statement taken from a wire."

The comment indicates that Howard Brooks was working for the FBI and carrying a recording device during the meeting with Gore. Brooks' attorney, Glenn Ivey, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Gore sat for a voluntary interview with the FBI in October and lied about the conversation with Brooks, telling agents that he did not keep records of money given to Brown. During the same interview, he later acknowledged the existence of the notebook but lied about when he shredded it. Gore admitted the false statements in court Tuesday.

The federal probe has cast a cloud over district government since shortly after Gray took office. Council Chairman Kwame Brown is also the subject of a federal investigation for activities during his 2008 campaign, and former councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. is heading to prison for three years for embezzling money from the city.

Tom Lindenfeld, a political consultant who worked on both of Fenty's mayoral campaigns, said the investigation is likely to imperil city government for the foreseeable future.

"The real harm is that we have the probability that things are going to grind to a halt," Lindenfeld said. "This is going to undermine the potential for real leadership in D.C. in ways that will hurt us for longer than we care to know."

Authorities say a witness to an attempted carjacking in Prince George's County chased a suspect into Takoma Park, where the suspect was later arrested.

The young man in the dark ballcap holds the gun in his lefthand, pointing at a convenience store clerk with a demand for cash. While no one was hurt customers are anxious.

The surveillance footage from cameras outside and inside this 7-Eleven off Godwin Drive in the City of Manassas shows a white man believed to be in his early 20's walk into the store around midnight Tuesday.

He strolls around the store appearing to wait until customers leave.

The moment comes when the man approaches the counter, pulls his ballcap over his eyes, then points the gun.

The clerk hands over wads of crumpled cash and the gunman leaves. It's possible he took off on a bicycle.

Manassas City detectives have shown these images to other jurisdiction police departments to see they recognize him. This may be the first time he's done something like this. They want to catch up with him, before he tries to do it again.

Raj Patel shooting: Surveillance video released in cold case murder

MPD officials are hoping that the release of surveillance video in a 2010 cold case murder will jog minds and lead to the arrest of suspects in a shooting that stunned a Northeast D.C. community.

It was the week Dec. 18 2010 when two men in hooded sweatshirts walked into the Newton Foodmart in Brookland, then shot and killed 46-year-old Raj Patel in front of his wife and son.

The shooting sent shockwaves through the tightly-knit Northeast D.C. Community.

"It was one of those rare incidents...we don't have a lot of that in this neighborhood," Brookland resident William Jones said.

Just days after the cold-blooded killing, Brookland neighbors gathered in force in honor of Patel, who gave free candy to children and didn't bat an eye if you were short on money.

The brief, 19-second long video shows the two suspects walking into the store. One then immediately brandishes a gun and points it at the clerk behind he counter. After the shooting, Patel's grieving wife sold the store and disappeared from the community.

Down the street at Beverly's House of Hairstyles, Patel's unsolved murder is marked with sadness.

"You always have it in the back of your mind," stylist Lenora Polk said. "You can't go around letting that control you. I would feel better if they were caught.

Nearly a year and a half later, police officials say this video is now critical in the search for the gunman and his partner. In the meantime, Patel's picture remains on the wall at the Brookland Grill, a reminder that his killer is still out there.

"That's just a horrible crime that somebody should pay for," Brookland resident Brandon Ellis said.

Woman alleges Daniel W. Harmon-Wright roughed her up

A shocking revelation is coming to light in connection with the shooting death of a 54-year-old housewife by a Culpeper officer.

Another woman says the Culpeper police officer involved in the shooting, also roughed her up four years ago. She accuses the police department of ignoring her complaint.

The officer involved in the shooting is Daniel W. Harmon-Wright, aka Daniel W. Sullivan. Harmon-Wright is a five year member of the force and former Marine.

He is accused of shooting and killing Patricia Cook.

Police say that Cook tried to drive away with the officer's arm caught in the door. Officials said on the day of the shooting that Harmon-Wright was talking to Cook when she closed the driver's side window suddenly while trying to get her identification.

State police say Cook drove off with the officer's arm trapped in the window and refused his commands to stop. He then shot her and the vehicle wrecked. Witnesses, though, disputed the official account of what happened.

Cook's husband has filed a lawsuit against the officer.

Ralph Justice arrested in Michael Rusinack murder-for-hire plot

An officer at a Prince William County jail was arrested Wednesday in connection with the murder-for-hire plot involving a Woodbridge man and his stepson, and police say the plot involved setting the victim up to be sexually assaulted.

Prince William County Police say that Ralph Lester Justice, 61, of Woodbridge, allegedly conspired with Michael Rusinack in a plot that eventually led to Rusinack trying to hire a hitman to kill his 28-year-old stepson.

"He took an oath not only to protect the inmates in his custody but to enforce the law," says neighbor Paul England.

According to court documents, Justice was working as a Jail Officer at the Prince William County Adult Detention Center when he conspired with Rusinack to have his stepson arrested, then sent to the jail. While in the facility, the plan was for Justice to allegedly place the man into a situation where he could be sexually assaulted.

Rusinack was arrested May 12 on allegations that he was willing to pay $2,000 for someone to beat or kill his stepson after his wife's death. Police say the hitman he tried to hire was actually an undercover Prince William County officer. He was allegedly angry with the stepson over allegedly taking a car, tools, jewelry and gift cards.

He also repeatedly posted threatening and cryptic messages on Facebook, supposedly about his stepson.

Justice, meanwhile, is being held on $3,000 bond. He's officially charged with conspiracy to commit forcible sodomy.

Jose Ventura, Desiree Alvarado charged in Montgomery County driver license scam

A man and his girlfriend are in custody in connection with a scam involving fake driver licenses that targeted Hispanic people in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Police say that Jose Luis Ventura, 33, and his girlfriend, Desiree Lauren Alvarado, 28, were arrested in late April on multiple charges, including possession of false government documents, theft and gun charges.

According to authorities, Ventura and Alvarado were allegedly telling people that they could legally get them Maryland driver licenses thanks to a connection he had inside the Motor Vehicle Administration. The two allegedly scammed multiple people out of thousands of dollars.

The plot began to unravel on March 12, when police say they pulled Ventura over in Silver Spring, where officers found fake ID cards, copies of other people's passports and personal paperwork and a handgun. A search warrant on a house he was known to stay at was then served.

During the execution of the warrant, police say they found even more documents, including IRS papers, passports and tax records belonging to others. An investigation revealed that Ventura and his girlfriend would allegedly target Hispanic people in an attempt to get them to pay him to get them a driver license.

He would allegedly charge each victim about $1,500 to $1,800 each and encourage them to recruit more people to purchase licenses from him. Alvarado would then allegedly drive the victims to an MVA office in Gaithersburg, where Ventura would meet the group and get the money from them.

After telling the victims that they were going inside to get the licenses, the two would allegedly disappear and have no further contact with the victims.

Montgomery County Police say they've identified at least 14 victims that met with Ventura on March 19 and another one who was victimized in early January. In total, police estimate Ventura scammed his victims out of about $24,200. Police also believe there are more victims who have yet to come forward.

Two people were shot in Northwest D.C. Wednesday afternoon in what police say was a home burglary attempt, and three suspects in the case are still on the loose.

Police say that three male suspects, including one who was reportedly between the ages of 13 and 15, entered a house in the 2400 block of North Capitol Street at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to authorities, the suspects, all wearing white t-shirts, burglarized the home, shot a woman in the foot and a man in the leg, then fled. Both victims were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"It's definitely a surprise," neighborhood resident Henry Howze said. "I would not expect anything like this here. It's a good community."

Neighbors tell ABC 7 News that the male victim goes by the name "CK," but none of the people around the area know him very well. Other residents echoed Howze's surprise about the location and timing of the shooting.

The neighborhood, which is just a few blocks east of Howard University, is the home of several students.

"Crime could happen anywhere, but it does seem like a fairly safe neighborhood," Howard student Yvette Minix said.

Police say they're still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether the victims and suspects knew each other or not. There was no word on what was taken from the house either.

Authorities say that just after 8 a.m., they received reports that an individual was pointing a gun at a school bus in the area of A.G. Richardson Elementary School and Pearl Sample Elementary School, which sit side-by-side on James Madison Highway south of downtown Culpeper.

No students or staff members were injured or in danger during the incident, officials say, and after making contact with five people about it, all five were apprehended.

The following individuals were arrested and charged:

- Michael P. Rhodes, 33, of North Wilkesboro N.C., is charged with drinking in public, profane swearing or intoxication in public and pointing/brandishing a firearm, or an object similar in appearance, (in such a manner so as to reasonably induce fear) within 1,000 feet of a school.

Deputies say the suspects were shooting at a target they placed in a bush at the rear of the hotel parking lot. The Sheriff's Office says they are working to determine who aimed the pellet gun at the bus.

All of the suspects, except for Sigler, are completing contract work in the area. Sigler met the four through a mutual employer, deputies say.

"We want to reassure parents that their children are safe at both schools," Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins said.

A Howard University Hospital surgery technician has been charged with selling the personal information of patients, the Washington Times reports.

Jim McElhatton of the Times writes that Laurie Napper is accused of selling the names of patients, their addresses and Medicare numbers. The charges come several weeks after hospital officials say a laptop containing medical records was stolen from the facility.

However, hospital officials say in a statement that the allegations against Napper are unrelated to that theft. In that incident, hospital officials said a former contractor had illegally downloaded the information to a personal laptop.

If convicted, Napper faces up to 10 years in prison.

Spotsylvania County drug thefts have officials securing stocks

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. (AP) - Spotsylvania County emergency officials are working to secure drug compartments in ambulances following a recent string of thefts.

Since April, two thefts have occurred at one rescue station and a third at another station. Morphine and other drugs were taken from locked ambulance compartments.

Fire Chief Chris Eudailey tells The Free Lance-Star that the Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management is changing the drug compartment locks in every ambulance. Separate lock boxes are being added for morphine and Versed, a drug used to produce drowsiness and to relieve anxiety before medical procedures.

Eudailey says fire and rescue officials also hope within the next few months to buy new drug compartments that have technology to identify who accessed them and when.
