Kristen Stewart: 'On the Road' nude scenes spark Cannes chatter

Daybreak Daily’s afternoon road trip across the pop-culture plains makes stops at a famous book, a noted film festival, other things and the mystery music video.

ON THE ROAD: It’s a hit at Cannes, so snap your fingers in unison, per the New York Times, “For filmmakers trying to capture the spirit of the Beats, there has always been the pressure — stated or not — of their work living up to the legends. . . It has been no different for Walter Salles, the first director to finally wrestle Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” to the big screen more than five decades after its publication caused a literary sensation and launched a thousand road trips, not to mention innumerable road movies.” http://nyti.ms/KSdP9W

MEANWHILE: Shirts optional for Kristen Stewart, per Vulture, “in the new film “On the Road’’ (which debuted on the Croisette this morning, adapted from the Jack Kerouac classic), Stewart takes her top off so many times that even the perennially shirtless Taylor Lautner would be impressed.” http://bit.ly/JUy7Vh

BIG STAGE: On a variety of fronts, per the Los Angeles Times, “On Wednesday night at a swanky party at the Cannes Film festival, Kanye West debuted the film, "Cruel Summer," which stars fellow rapper Kid Cudi and the Lebanese actress Razane Jammal (with a bit part by West) and unfolds over seven screens in a specially designed pop-up theater.” http://lat.ms/Lj52NS

MORE OF THE SAME: ‘Idol’ crowns a familiar-looking winner, per the AP, “Everyone expected Phillip Phillips to win "American Idol" - except Phillips himself. Shortly after cleaning the confetti out of his hair, the folksy guitar-strumming crooner who bested vocal powerhouse Jessica Sanchez on Wednesday still seemed surprised that he'd actually won the whole shebang.” http://apne.ws/LsLR3v

MEANWHILE: And he didn’t even win, per Billboard, “For the first time, one "American Idol" replaces another at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart as Adam Lambert's "Trespassing" debuts atop the list with 77,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. His arrival bumps last week's leader, Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away," down to No. 3 (54,000; down 55%). It's Lambert's first No. 1 album and is his second major label studio set.” http://bit.ly/KCjdfK

PUTTING HIS FEET BACK IN THE WATER: Of combining acting and music, per The Hollywood Reporter, “AngelWorld Entertainment will finance and produce the Jessica Biel-Chloe Moretz-Jeffrey Dean Morgan starrer “The Devil in the Deep Blue Sea’’, with Justin Timberlake set to compose the movie's soundtrack and serve as music supervisor.” http://bit.ly/JVgyEq

JACKIE-O: An actor gets a coveted role, per Screen Daily, “Screen sat down with “The Paperboy” director Lee Daniels in Cannes last night at the film’s reception drinks. Daniels disclosed to Screen that he has chosen “Friday Night Lights’’ star Minka Kelly for the part of Jackie Kennedy in his next feature “The Butler’’, starring Forest Whitaker as Eugene Allen, the White House butler who served eight presidents.” http://bit.ly/JZJQ30

ON THE MEND: At least it wasn’t a spinal tap, per the New York Post, “Michael McKean is off Broadway after getting mowed down by a car on the Upper West Side — but he’s keeping a sense of humor about it. “We always tell each other to break a leg in this business. I never thought it would happen to me this way!” the actor quipped to producer Jeffrey Richards, who is using an understudy for McKean in Gore Vidal’s “The Best Man.” McKean, 64, was slammed by a car at about 3 p.m. Tuesday at the corner of West 86th Street and Broadway.” http://nyp.st/KSqBoS

ELTON JOHN: He tried to tough out an upper respiratory infection, per E!, “But his condition only worsened, resulting in the 65-year-old singer's hospitalization on Wednesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. As a result, John has had to cancel three performances scheduled for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in Las Vegas.” http://eonli.ne/KdQF0s

ALL THINGS CANNES: Clip and save, as they say, per indieWIRE, “To make things easy for readers, Indiewire is offering up this handy guide to all the films in the various sections of the festival. Below is a day by day guide to the official selection, as well as links to individual film pages for each festival selection, including photos, trailers, clips, anJAd film critic grades as part of our Criticwire survey of fest films.” http://bit.ly/LIyRxh

AND FINALLY: Today’s mystery music video. http://bit.ly/JXVzPo

Maxim Hot 100: Bar Refaeli is the readers' choice

Daybreak Daily’s afternoon photo shoot of the pop-culture world finds a pretty good bar, many different shades, other things, and the mystery music video.

HOT 100: Bar Refaeli is No. 1, per Maxim, “As we're reminded every four years, democracy is the cornerstone upon which our great land is built. That's why this year, for the first time in Hot 100 history, we let you, the readers of Maxim, weigh in on who should comprise the definitive list of the world's most beautiful women. From movie stars to murder suspects to a cartoon, here are the sexy results. God bless America!” http://bit.ly/JO9Z6s

The magazine's Hot 100 list topper Tweeted a photo on Monday of herself with one of her many fans. "On my way to LA. Had to chat with the pilots ..." the model (and Leonardo DiCaprio's ex, 25, Tweeted with the picture, in which she sports a baggy sweatshirt, and a much more natural, little-to-no makeup look.” http://bit.ly/K96LHj

CLASS WARFARE: Hey, it’s timely, per the Los Angeles Times, “Most feature filmmakers shy away from acknowledging overt political messages in their films, hiding behind platitudes such as "I just wanted to tell the best story" or "I'd rather let others be the ones to interpret my work." Not "Killing Them Softly" writer-director Andrew Dominik and his star-producer, Brad Pitt, who offered with frankness -- both in the film and at a Cannes Film Festival news conference that followed on Tuesday morning -- their unfavorable opinion of capitalism as recently practiced in the U.S.” http://bit.ly/JzvC47

MEANWHILE: Brad makes his case, per The Hollywood Reporter, “Meeting with the press at the Cannes Film Festival where the movie is having its world premiere today, Pitt did acknowledge the upcoming November elections, saying, “I think we’re going to see more negative ads than ever before, and I certainly don’t want this film to in any way be mistaken for that.” http://bit.ly/LjnJDP

MOVING LIPS: With no voice, per Newser, “Chris Brown just got a little less popular. Singers including Pink and Joe Jonas are lambasting him for lip-syncing "Turn Up the Music," the song he performed at the Billboard Music Awards program.” http://bit.ly/Kk3S7m

WILL SMITH: He’s eyeing a certain role, per E!, “In a recent interview with the BBC, the Men in Black III star said playing Barack Obama "is "definitely something I would consider." He also revealed the hilarious reason he feels he's "the most natural choice" to play the president.” http://eonli.ne/JzJGKT

IF YOU’VE GOT IT: She’s sure flaunting it, per Radar, “Proving once again that she simply can’t be tamed, Miley Cyrus nearly had a wardrobe malfunction on the streets of Los Angeles Monday, and RadarOnline.com has the pics.” http://bit.ly/KJ2zke

Miley Cyrus: Billboard Music Awards outfit quite revealing

Daybreak Daily’s afternoon invitation into the pop-culture world finds Montana sporting a not-so-conservative look, Robin Gibb, other things, and the mystery music video.

DRESS WHITES: Actually, no dress at all, per Allie is Wired, “Miley Cyrus attended the 2012 Billboard Music Awards and debuted a new retro hairstyle. Cyrus, in her quest to prove that she’s no longer a child, showed up in a white blazer sans trousers, and possibly sans bra, by Jean Paul Gaultier. Needless to say, it’s got the internet up in arms with most suggesting that the look is too mature for her.” http://huff.to/KsfIZl

MEANWHILE: Of a reluctant reward receiver, per Rolling Stone, “Adele dominated the Billboard Music Awards last night, winning 12 awards including top artist, top female artist and top album. The British pop star did not attend the show, though, so her awards were not presented on the broadcast.” http://bit.ly/KFQYlX

ROBIN GIBB: His sound evolved, and did so well, per the Los Angeles Times, “Their hits could fill an entire Saturday night, last until the first church bell rang on Sunday morning and provide a sweat-drenched workout on the dance floor that broke only for the slow numbers. Even more remarkable was that each classic gem of the Bee Gees, whose co-founder Robin Gibb died Sunday after a long battle with cancer, would be packed with feeling.” http://lat.ms/KePc9D

SORRY, PAL: A thief is a thief, per the AP, “The Supreme Court has refused to take up a Boston University student's constitutional challenge to a $675,000 penalty for illegally downloading 30 songs and sharing them on the Internet.” http://apne.ws/LlSmVK

LIVE FROM NEW YORK: A strange end game, per the New York Times, “Though tradition – and Lorne Michaels – try to dictate that major shakeups in the “Saturday Night Live” roster are not announced until the late summer or early fall when contracts for the new season are finalized, Saturday’s season finale certainly felt like a swan song for at least a couple of longtime “S.N.L.” cast members as rumors swirled that Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis were planning their departures this year.” http://nyti.ms/K7YrI9

CABLE STUFF: Just the facts, per The Hollywood Reporter, “Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable announced Cable WiFi on Monday that will enable each other’s high-speed Internet customers to access their big city WiFi networks outside their home market, creating over 50,000 hotspots where consumers can access their Internet service.” http://bit.ly/KDnvVN

WHITNEY: A new single is released, per Radar, “Hours after John Legend, Jordin Sparks and daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown paid homage to the late Whitney Houston at Sunday's Billboard Music Awards, the singer's final song Celebrate was released Monday.” http://bit.ly/K4tsMG

TOO MUCH INFORMATION: Her new husband isn’t as fashion minded, per People, “While Mark Zuckerberg was taking his company public on Friday, his then-bride-to-be, Priscilla Chan, was quietly putting the final touches on her wedding gown. For her surprise Saturday nuptials, Chan wore designer Claire Pettibone’s “Sky Between the Branches” gown, an ivory laser-cut floral dress adorned with matte sequins lined in silk.” http://bit.ly/LuOsAg

SUCH WISDOM: Wonder what she thinks about Charles Manson, per Us Weekly, “Chris Brown has a new ally in British pop star Cheryl Cole. During a recent radio interview on In:Demand With Alex James, "Call My Name" singer Cole, 28, said she believes Brown has made positive changes in his life since assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in February 2009.” http://bit.ly/JrPCfy

SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO?: Maybe it’s not his call, per indieWIRE, “The internet was abuzz this weekend with news of what can either be regarded as Dan Harmon's firing or non-rehiring at "Community," the series he created and served as show runner on for Sony, who produced the series for NBC.” http://bit.ly/Lb3IMW

Justin Bieber Billboard date a Virginia teen

Sunday evening’s Billboard Music Awards gave us all so much to talk about—one of them being who teen pop star Justin Bieber took to the awards show.

Mark Zuckerberg marries Priscilla Chan

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg updated his status to "married" on Saturday.

Zuckerberg and 27-year-old Priscilla Chan tied the knot at a small ceremony at his Palo Alto, Calif., home, capping a busy week for the couple, according to a guest authorized to speak for the couple. The person spoke only on the condition of anonymity.

Zuckerberg took his company public in one of the most anticipated stock offerings in Wall Street history Friday. And Chan graduated from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, on Monday, the same day Zuckerberg turned 28, the person said.

The couple met at Harvard and have been together for more than nine years, the person said.

Zuckerberg designed the ring featuring "a very simple ruby," according to the person.

The ceremony took place in Zuckerberg's backyard before fewer than 100 guests, including Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg.

The guests all thought they were coming to celebrate Chan's graduation but were told after they arrived that the event was in fact a wedding.

"Everybody was shocked," the guest said.

Rather than his trademark hoodie, Zuckerberg wore a suit for the ceremony, while his bride wore a traditional wedding dress.

Food was served family-style and included dishes from the couple's favorite Palo Alto sushi restaurant. The two had been planning the marriage for months but were waiting until Chan had graduated to hold the wedding, the guest said.

The timing wasn't tied to the IPO, since the date the company planned to go public was a "moving target," the guest said.

Even after the IPO, Zuckerberg remains Facebook's single largest shareholder, with 503.6 million shares. And he controls the company with 56 percent of its voting stock.

The site, which was born in a dorm room eight years ago, has grown into a worldwide network of almost a billion people.

Zuckerberg founded Facebook at Harvard in 2004.

He was selected as Time's Person of the Year in 2010, at age 26.

Zuckerberg grew up in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.

Jennifer Lopez: Idol, Forbes, Vogue shine the spotlight

Daybreak Daily’s afternoon disregard for the ‘Do Not Enter’ sign at the entrance to the pop-culture world finds an all-over-the place judge, a shout-out from L.A. for Chuck Brown, other things, and the mystery music video.

CHUCK BROWN: The West Coast weighs in on D.C.’s loss, per the Los Angeles Times, “Featuring remarkable Afro-Cuban polyrhythms via pounding congas and rototoms, punctuated bursts of brass and Brown shouting out call-and-response phrases alongside grooves that extended many songs to over eight minutes long — and, more importantly, almost two or three times that in a live setting — Brown's music was for partying. Though it flirted with mainstream success in the '80s, the music has remained a regional phenomenon, a uniquely American strain of dance music.” http://lat.ms/JiKj0V

WHITNEY HOUSTON: This is the man who eulogized her, per the Detroit Free Press, “Detroit police said they don't believe a group of young attackers knew they had targeted a prominent Detroit pastor and gospel recording artist when they beat and carjacked him Wednesday afternoon. The Rev.
DIGITAL DANCES: Be true to your school – at your peril, per Deadline Hollywood, “CW President Mark Pedowitz straddled the fence between digital and traditional media in the brief description of the network strategy he provided to the audience at his upfront presentation.
JUICE BOXES: That’s what they throw at these concerts, per the AP, “Three members of the children's music quartet The Wiggles will be hanging up their colorful outfits and leaving the Australian band this year, with the Blue Wiggle the lone original member left dancing.” http://apne.ws/Jz67Gr

STRIPES: He has earned his, per Vulture, “It is a known fact that no party really starts until Bill Murray does his thing. That proved to be as true in Cannes as it has in Austin bars and Manhattan karaoke parlors.” http://bit.ly/J2MC4l

HALF A BUCK: His hospital bill will exceed that, per X17, “50 cent was admitted to the hospital Wednesday to undergo surgery, but that didn't stop the rapper from posting pics of himself to Twitter looking a little under the weather. He might be a gangster rapper, but we got a chance to see Mr. Cent's softer side, dressed in a hospital gown surrounded by stuffed animals.” http://bit.ly/JLueyP

GOOD STUFF: Revealingly funny, per the Huffington Post, “Mick Jagger is hosting "Saturday Night Live" for the very first time this weekend, and based on promos just released, he appears to go all in for the 37th season finale of the NBC comedy show.” http://huff.to/KjVtyd

POPULAR THERE: But not so much here, per The Hollywood Reporter, “Sacha Baron Cohen's world travels appear to be paying off, with his new comedy The Dictator posting a promising $4.2 million from nine markets as it began to roll out overseas on Wednesday, including $1.6 million in the U.K. The Paramount picture is expected to fare notably better internationally than domestically, where it opened to a softish $4.2 million on Wednesday.” http://bit.ly/JzcWaV

IDOL: The Final Three, per People, “Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez.
FAKE OR NOT FAKE?: This is a really good read, per the New York Times, “Deep inside a nondescript building in SoHo, a two-story steel vault marked “Fort Knox” holds a huge arsenal of weapons that has armed action heroes and their adversaries, fake armies and feds, and Tony Soprano. . . “All these guns are real,” said the arsenal’s owner, Rick Washburn, a former actor whose company, the Specialists, has become an emporium for production weapons on the East Coast.” http://nyti.ms/Jj1G1y

Donna Summer dies: Disco star dies at the age of 63

NEW YORK (AP) - Disco queen Donna Summer, whose pulsing anthems such as "Last Dance," ''Love to Love You Baby" and "Bad Girls" became the soundtrack for a glittery age of sex, drugs, dance and flashy clothes, has died. She was 63.

Her family released a statement saying Summer died Thursday morning and that they "are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy."

The family did not disclose the cause of death. She had been living in Englewood, Fla., with her husband Bruce Sudano.

"Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time," the statement said.

Summer came to prominence just as disco was burgeoning, and came to define the era with a string of No. 1 hits and her luxurious hair and glossy, open lips.

Disco became as much defined by her sultry, sexual vocals - her bedroom moans and sighs - as the relentless, pulsing rhythms of the music itself.

Elton John said in a statement that Summer was more than the Queen of Disco.

"Her records sound as good today as they ever did. That she has never been inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is a total disgrace especially when I see the second-rate talent that has been inducted," he said. "She is a great friend to me and to the Elton John AIDS Foundation and I will miss her greatly."

"Love to Love You Baby," with its erotic moans, was Summer's first hit and one of the most scandalous songs of the polyester-and-platform-heel era. The song was later sampled by LL Cool J, Timbaland and Beyonce, who interpolated the hit for her jam "Naughty Girl."

Unlike some other stars of disco who faded as the music became less popular, Summer was able to grow beyond it and later segued to a pop-rock sound. She had one of her biggest hits in the 1980s with "She Works Hard for the Money," which became another anthem, this time for women's rights.

Soon after, Summer became a born-again Christian and faced controversy when she was accused of making anti-gay comments in relation to the AIDS epidemic. Summer denied making the comments, but was the target of a boycott.

Religion played an important role in her life in later years, said Michael Levine, who briefly worked as her publicist.

"She was very committed to God, spirituality and religion. Her passion in her life, besides music, was God, spirituality and religion. She held a bible study class at her home every week," he said.

Summer, real name LaDonna Adrian Gaines, was born in 1948 in Boston. She was raised on gospel music and became the soloist in her church choir by age 10.

"There was no question I would be a singer, I just always knew. I had credit in my neighborhood, people would lend me money and tell me to pay it back when I got famous," Summer said in a 1989 interview with The Associated Press.

"Love to Love You Baby," released in 1975, was her U.S. chart debut and the first of 19 No. 1 dance hits between 1975 and 2008 - second only to Madonna.

The song was a breakthrough hit for Summer and for disco - a legend of studio ecstasy and the genre's ultimate sexual anthem.

Summer came up with the idea of the song and first recorded it as a demo in 1975, on the condition that another singer perform it commercially. But Casablanca Records president Neil Bogart liked the track so much that he suggested to producer Giorgio Morodor they re-record it, and make it longer - what would come to be known as a "disco disc."

Summer had reservations about the lyrics - "Do it to me again and again" - but imagined herself as a movie star playing a part. So she agreed to sing, lying down on the studio floor, in darkness, and letting her imagination take over. Solo and multitracked, she whispered, she groaned, she crooned. Drums, bass, strings and keyboards answered her cries. She simulated climax so many times that the BBC kept count: 23, in 17 minutes.

Through the rest of the disco era she burned up the charts: She was the only artist to have three consecutive double-LPs hit No. 1, "Live and More," ''Bad Girls" and "On the Radio." She was also the first female artist with four No. 1 singles in a 13-month period, according to the Rock Hall of Fame, where she was a nominee this year but was passed over.

She was never comfortable with the "Disco Queen" label. Musically, she began to change in 1979 with "Hot Stuff," which had a tough, rock 'n' roll beat. Her diverse sound helped her earn Grammy Awards in the dance, rock, R&B and inspirational categories.

Summer said grew up on rock 'n' roll and later covered the Bruce Springsteen song "Protection."

"I like the Moody Blues, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones as well as Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, the Supremes and Temptations," she said. "I didn't know many white kids who didn't know the Supremes; I don't know many black kids who don't know the Moody Blues."

Warwick said in a statement that she was sad to lose a great performer and "dear friend."

"My heart goes out to her husband and her children," Warwick said. "Prayers will be said to keep them strong."

Musician Nile Rodgers tweeted: "For the last half hour or so I've been lying in my bed crying and stunned. Donna Summer RIP."

Summer released her last album, "Crayons," in 2008. It was her first full studio album in 17 years. She also performed on "American Idol" that year with its top female contestants.

Even as disco went out of fashion, she remained a fixture in dance clubs, endlessly sampled and remixed. Her music has also been sampled by the Pussycat Dolls and rapper Nas.

In a sign of her continued relevance, the Broadway musical "Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Musical," features two versions of Summer songs with "Hot Stuff" and "MacArthur Park."

"It's a tragedy to lose an icon at such a young age," actor and singer Nick Adams, who plays Adam in the show, said in an email.

Chuck Brown dies: 'Godfather of Go-Go' passes away at 75

WATCH: ABC7's Sam Ford reports from the Howard Theater Thursday and talks with local residents who grew up listening to the Godfather of Go-Go.

Chuck Brown, the legendary musician who is known as the "Godfather of Go-Go," passed away Wednesday, his daughter confirmed to ABC7's Sam Ford.

Brown died Wednesday at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. Hospital spokesman Gary Stephenson confirmed Brown had died after a hospital stay that began April 18.

His publicist says the cause of death is multi-organ failure due to sepsis.

Brown's passing comes about a week after the Washington Post confirmed that the musician, considered the pioneer of Go-Go music, had been hospitalized with pneumonia.

Shortly after his death was confirmed, radio stations across the D.C. metro area were filled with his music. Sadness and grief over his passing was soon replaced by a celebration of his life by so-called "Chuckaholics" - his most ardent fans.

"We came out to celebrate the life and legacy of a D.C. icon," Chuck Brown fan Luis Cardona said. "I'm a Chuckaholic from way back."

Brown's 1970 hit, "Bustin' Loose," hit #1 on the MCA charts. The song was later sampled in the 2002 Nelly song, "Hot in Herre," which won Nelly a Grammy.

He had recently postponed numerous shows due to his failing health.

“Go-go is D.C.’s very own unique contribution to the world of pop music, and Chuck Brown was regarded as Go-go’s creator and, arguably, its most legendary artist,” D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said in a statement. “Today is a very sad day for music lovers the world over, but especially in the District of Columbia.

"Without Chuck Brown, the world – and our city – will be a different place. What a loss."

Brown always liked to tell the story of how he grew up on the streets of Washington shining shoes, then later ended up in prison. That's where he would say he got his hands on his first guitar, and the go-go revolution was on.

Thanks to Brown and his deep, gravelly voice, go-go music was uniquely identified with Washington. That's where he continued to play the city's club circuit late in life.

All across D.C., Chuck Brown fans and friends continue to react to his passing on Thursday, flocking to hot spots to remember the music legend.

"Chuck was so good, we had to sneak into the Masonic Temple just to go, because we was little boys," says Chris Galloway.

Gregory "Sugar Bear" Elliott of the band EU (Experience Unlimited) followed Chuck's tradition. The band never stops playing, no breaks to rest.

"He was like a father to me," says Sugar Bear. "I've known Chuck since I was nine years old."

And Mayor Vincent Gray says the city will lower its flags to half staff in Chuck's honor.

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) - A Texas judge has ordered Hall of Famer Deion Sanders to pay $10,550 in monthly child support as part of his divorce.

Sanders and his estranged wife, Pilar, agreed Tuesday to share custody of their three children for the summer.

The judge in McKinney ordered the ex-Dallas Cowboy to pay $3,500 a month for a house where his estranged wife now lives and where their children will sometimes stay. Sanders, who's an NFL Network analyst, also must pay $275,000 in his spouse's recent legal fees.

Pilar Sanders had also sought $14,000 in monthly spousal support.

The couple previously shared a mansion in Prosper. An April 23 scuffle at the house led to allegations of assault by both parties. A judge ruled neither committed domestic violence.

Ellen DeGeneres wins nation's top humor prize

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ellen DeGeneres, who broke ground in 1997 as the first lead character on prime-time TV to reveal she was gay, is winning the nation's top humor prize.

The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced Tuesday that DeGeneres will receive the 15th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. She will be honored Oct. 22 with a lineup of star performers in a tribute show that will be recorded for broadcast at a later date.

In a written statement, DeGeneres said receiving the same award as past honorees Bill Cosby, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell makes her wonder, "why didn't I get this sooner?"

It was 15 years ago — just before the humor prize was created — when DeGeneres came out on Time magazine's cover and as her character on the sitcom "Ellen" to a record 46 million viewers. The popular show began losing viewers, though, and was canceled a year later. DeGeneres said at the time that ABC caved in to fear and abandoned the show. She faced tough questions over whether the sitcom was "too gay" and if she had torpedoed her career by pushing a "gay agenda."

"When I'm accused of becoming political, I'm showing love," DeGeneres told ABC's Diane Sawyer in a 1998 interview. "How is that political to teach love and acceptance?"

The rejection was enough to send DeGeneres into a deep depression.

"Ellen" paved the way, though, for future shows to also break the taboo of showing gay characters. "Will and Grace" would follow, along with "Glee," ''Modern Family" and others.

DeGeneres bounced back with movie roles, including as the voice of a lead character in the animated film "Finding Nemo." She also has a hit talk show now in its ninth season, best-selling books and had a stint as the fourth judge on "American Idol."

Cappy McGarr, an executive producer for the Mark Twain Prize show and a Kennedy Center board member, said DeGeneres has a special style of observational humor in the tradition of Twain. She also makes people laugh across political lines.

"She's not just a comedian," he said. "She's really a miracle worker. She got the president to dance, the first lady to do pushups and (Republican) Tom Delay to laugh."

The New Orleans native got her start as an emcee at a local comedy club in her hometown. In 1982, a videotape of her club performance won DeGeneres Showtime's "Funniest Person in America." By 1986, she appeared on "The Tonight Show" and became the first female comedian summoned to Johnny Carson's desk to chat about her performance.

The Mark Twain prize honors people who have an impact on society in the tradition of Samuel Clemens, better known as Twain, as a social commentator and satirist.

McGarr said the Kennedy Center, which awards the prize, is not making a political statement by selecting the trailblazing DeGeneres.

"This has nothing to do with any political issue," he said. "But she's brilliantly shined a light on society, and that's what Mark Twain did."

Dancing doctors: Former competitive dancer turned doctor finds love

Johns Hopkins plastic surgeon Dr. Ariel Rad wasn't born a dancer. He began the craft when he was 23 years old.

"I stumbled upon dancing," he said. "I realized that you can do it competitively."

Dr. Rad, who had been an athlete all his life, made it his mission to succeed as a dancer. He was able to achieve a ranking of 38th in the world.

He even went up against some of the "Dancing With the Stars" professionals.

"People like Maks or Karina - I actually danced with them and against them. We had the same coach in New York," he said.

Unlike those pro dancers, Dr. Rad set dancing aside to focus on his medical career, and three years ago, he met Dr. Noelle Sherber, a dermatologist, at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Rad and Dr. Sherber just happened to be consulted by the same patient at the same time, he said. They met at the patient's bedside and went out for a first date the next night.

Like Rad, Sherber knew how to dance -- her mother taught ballroom dancing. The two began dancing together for fun.

"She already knew all the basics in ballroom and more," Rad said. "It's easy to work together."

The two doctors continue to work together professionally as well.

"I think if you can dance together, you can work together," said Sherber, "because it's an attention to detail, a dependence on the other person."

Five months ago , they got married, and now they spend many nights cheering on Rad's former teammates on "Dancing With the Stars."

Though Rad says he's glad he chose doctoring over dancing, Sherber thinks he could have won the show.

The couple is planning to dance together at an upcoming fundraising event and say they can't think of a better way to have fun, help others and get great exercise.

'Max Payne 3' video game has potential for huge success

Daybreak Daily’s afternoon jog around the track with the pop-culture world setting the pace finds a computer game, a note rapper, other things, and the mystery music video.

REVIEW: Not sure about the game but the writing here is good, per the New York Times, “After the better part of eight years in development (the last Max Payne title was released in 2003), Max Payne 3 is a taut and compelling action game wrapped in the sumptuous, gritty and delightful production detail that is the Rockstar hallmark. That means pitch-perfect writing and voice acting, luscious and realistic visual design, and by far the finest musical taste in gaming.” http://nyti.ms/L305YG

POTUS POTENTIAL: Jay-Z has a high-ranking someone in mind for his Philadelphia festival, per Rolling Stone, “Ah, yeah, that guy. I'm gonna try. I'm gonna tell you guys right now: I'm gonna give him a call and I'm gonna try to get him to perform – do a little rendition of Al Green – but I doubt it. I think that opens up the political season. He'll be so far into helping the world that he probably won't have time, but I'm absolutely going to ask him.” http://bit.ly/LNPO5N

MEANWHILE: Mr. Z talks about the politics of gay marriage, per The Hollywood Reporter, "I've always thought it as something that was still, um, holding the country back," the star told CNN, referring to bans on same-sex marriage. "What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That's their business. [It] is no different than discriminating against blacks. It's discrimination plain and simple." http://bit.ly/LNWG2X

NICE DEBUT: Howard Stern is both good and well-behaved on ‘AGT,’ per the Los Angeles Times, “Stern himself played the part, for a minute: "These executives at NBC must be out of their mind taking a risk on me." To the audience: "I say I won't make it through the first show -- what do you think?" But it quickly became evident that, like fellow judges Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel, he meant to play the game the way the game is meant to be played, because, to a deep degree, he believes in it.” http://lat.ms/IVfX0x

FILLING A VOID: Actually, two voids, per Deadline Hollywood, “Dan Fogelman’s alien family comedy The Neighbors landed the coveted post-Modern Family slot for a block of single-camera comedies about unconventional families. Freshman soap Revenge was handed ABC’s signature Sunday 9 PM slot occupied for the last eight seasons by Desperate Housewives.” http://bit.ly/JkGgjF

DEATH: Of a salesman, per Newser, “A tough-as-nails Cajun alligator-hunting star of the History Channel's Swamp People dropped dead in his boat yesterday. The cause of death was not immediately known, but witnesses said Mitchell Guist, who would have turned 49 on Friday, appeared to suffer a seizure shortly after launching his boat for another day of snagging alligators.” http://bit.ly/MgxN2J

Nono Gaga: Taking the Ed Sullivan route, per the AP, “Lady Gaga will have to cancel her sold-out show in Indonesia following protests by Islamic hard-liners and conservative lawmakers, who said her sexy clothes and dance moves will corrupt young people.” http://apne.ws/JEGRL3

SHOULD BE GOOD: This man is always good, per Variety, “Martin Scorsese is teaming with Lord Richard Attenborough and Anthony Haas to produce "Silver Ghost," a drama based on the true story of the founding of Rolls Royce that will be a co-production between the "Hugo" helmer's Sikelia Prods. banner and Zuma Prods.” http://bit.ly/Jh54V2

TOM CRUISE: The Interview, per Playboy, “As he nears 50, Cruise has put his temporary career crisis in the rearview mirror and is once again among the handful of stars whose participation gets a movie made. Seven years after being on the precipice, Cruise is coming off the biggest box office hit of his career in Mission: -Impossible—Ghost Protocol, a crowd-pleasing film he also produced.” http://bit.ly/IW6Mf4

WHATEVER: To repeat, “whatever,” per Radar, “The second masseur suing John Travolta for sexual assault and battery sent several e-mails to his bosses the day after the alleged incident occurred and made no mention of Travolta, nor the alleged incident, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.” http://bit.ly/Jh4HtS

OF COURSE HE SAYS THIS: What else is he going to say?, per TMZ, “Simon Cowell isn't bothered one bit at the prospect of Britney Spears falling apart during a live episode of "X Factor" ... insisting whatever happens will be ratings GOLD!!” http://bit.ly/KjQDBx

Mitchell Guist dies: 'Swamp People' star passes away in Louisiana

PIERRE PART, La. (AP) - A Louisiana sheriff says a cast member of the reality TV show "Swamp People" has died.

Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack says Mitchell Guist (GIHST) was pronounced dead at a hospital Monday. He had fallen while aboard his boat on the Intracoastal Waterway, near Pierre Part.

According to CNN, Guist may have had a seizure while on the boat.

Waguespack says initial reports from deputies in neighboring St. Martin Parish are that Guist was traveling on the waterway around 9 a.m. when he fell. The boat returned to a nearby landing in St. Martin and Guist was taken to a hospital. The cause of his fall is unclear, and there is no word yet on the official cause of death.

"Swamp People," on the History cable television channel, features residents of Louisiana's Atchafalaya swamp country during alligator hunting season.

According to a statement on the show's website, Guist "passed on the swamp, doing what he loved." He was often seen on the show with his brother, Glenn.

Pierre Part is about 83 miles west of New Orleans. The show follows Guist and other Louisiana swampers during the 30-day alligator hunting season, a critical part of the year in the region.

Lady Gaga may cancel Indonesia show

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Lady Gaga will have to cancel her sold-out show in Indonesia following protests by Islamic hard-liners and conservative lawmakers, who said her sexy clothes and dance moves will corrupt the youth.

National police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar, responding to the pressure, said Tuesday that the permit for her June 3 "Born This Way Ball" concert had been denied.

Indonesia, a nation of 240 million people, has more Muslims than any other. Although it is secular and has a long history of religious tolerance, a small extremist fringe has become more vocal in recent years.

Hard-liners have loudly criticized Lady Gaga, saying the suggestive nature of her show threatened to undermine the country's moral fiber. Some threatened to use physical force to prevent her from stepping off the plane.

Lawmakers and religious leaders, too, have spoken out against her.

Worried they could not guarantee security, local police recommended the permit for the show be denied, said Amar, adding that national police decided Tuesday to comply.

It was supposed to be the biggest show on Lady Gaga's Asian tour, with fans snapping up every seat in Jakarta's 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno stadium - half of them in the first two hours of sales.

Permits usually are issued about three weeks before a concert in Jakarta, so it is common to sell tickets well ahead of receiving the permit. It was not immediately clear if the ticket sales would be refunded. The local promoter, Michael Rusli, could not be reached for comment.

"I'm very disappointed," said Mariska Renata, who had tickets to the Jakarta show.

She said by bowing to the wishes of "troublemakers," authorities only give them more power. "We are mature enough to be able to separate our own moral values from arts and culture," Renata said.

Lady Gaga's Asian tour started late last month and many of the stops have sold out. The South Korean concerts were limited to fans 18 or older because conservatives there raised objections.

Barbara Shultze to marry Jean-Francois Ramos

A local bachelorette has been waiting 70 years to find Mr. Right - and she's finally found him.

Barbara Shultze of Frederick, Maryland is about to marry the 75-year-old French man she met on a dating website for seniors. Her mother and father will both be at the wedding to watch their daughter walk down the aisle for the first time.

“He got down on his knee and pulled a chair close just in case he couldn't get back up,” Shultze says.

“And I used it too,” says Jean-Francois Ramos, her fiancé.

In picking out her ring, Shultze had a simple philosophy: When you get older you need more substance and so that's what she was looking for.

Even as a young girl, the eldest of seven children, Schultze knew she'd rather grow up to be alone than marry the wrong man.

So Shultze remained single, committed to her career as a realtor. And as the years ticked by, her siblings married and had children while Shultze would wait 70 years and kiss a few frogs before finding her prince, Ramos.

“She had been to many, many frogs. Well, a frenchman is called a frog. So, she's getting a frog!” he jokes.

And with Shultze on her wedding day, will be her mother and father - 93 and 92 years old. Mr. and Mrs. Shultze have been married 71 years.

From Mr. Shultze, who practiced walking his daughter down the aisle, a bit of advice: Don't let the romance die.

Shultze and Ramos will marry later this month in front of nearly 140 friends and family
