More than one hundred parents from across the nation converged on D.C., hoping to reverse some sobering numbers.

High school athletes suffer two million injuries every year. Last year, there were 33 deaths from youth sports.

At the "Youth Sports Safety Summit," the first ever national action plan for sports safety was drafted. Everyone at the meeting agreed too many lives have been lost on the field or court - lives that could have been saved.

"He's extremely tough. I thought he'll bounce back up, and that was not the case," said Beth Mallon of her son, Tommy.

It's been four years since Tommy's high school lacrosse game when horribly wrong. The then 17-year-old fractured the top of his spine and suffered a severe concussion after colliding with another player.

Beth, who founded Advocates for Injured Athletes, added, "His contact sport career ended. He was going to go on to play college lacrosse and that ended."

But what didn't end was his life.

Beth credits a certified athletic trainer with coming to Tommy's rescue.

"I can't even think about had she not been there what would have happened to him," Beth continued.

James Thornton, the president of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, said, " Less than 50 percent of the high schools in the United States have access to an athletic trainer. Probably a number significantly less than that have one full-time."

Thornton's organization hosted the 4th Annual Youth Sports Safety Summit. The more than 100 organizations gathered want support on Capitol Hill for putting athletic trainers in every high school in America.

They also have other goals in mid.

"...knowing proper tackling techniques, recognizing the signs of a concussion. If you're a parent, even if you see a kid that's not your own stumbling a little bit, stand up," Lisa Gfeller added.

Lisa Gfeller is standing up so no family endures her same heartache.

Four years ago, her son, Matthew, took a bad hit to the helmet at the end of his first varsity football game.

"I just thought...he got his bell rung. He'll be fine. When I got out there and saw him, I knew it was much more serious," she recalled.

Matthew, her youngest of three children, never regained consciousness.

She now has a foundation in his memory and is dedicated to preventing, recognizing and treating head injuries in youth sports.

"I think that's what's helped us heal the most knowing that when the football team goes out, when the soccer teams go out that they have a lot more information than they did in 2008...,"Gfeller said. " and kids I really feel that they're safer now, so I feel that Matthew is our little angel that's still working."

Wednesday, the Youth Sports Safety Alliance will spend the day sharing its action plan with lawmakers. The organization isn't looking for federal funding. It just wants to raise awareness of the need for greater safety for young athletes.

The protest was organized and carried out in response to the firing of head football coach Greg Fuller, who was terminated last week after it was discovered that the team used an ineligible player.

Students wore t-shirts to show their support during the walkout.

Woodson Quarterback Bobby Enoth said, "I don't think he should be punished for something that he didn't do. It wasn't his fault."

Fuller was fired because the school system says one of the team's players doesn't really live in D.C., making his involvement on the team illegal.

Those who support the coach ask how Fuller was supposed to know the student was ineligible to play since he was previously enrolled at Phelps High, another D.C. public school. Phelps has no football team, so the student was allowed to play at Woodson.

"How is he responsible for residency for an athlete that goes to another  school...," PTSA mom Sirraya Gant asked.

Parents and activists also met with the school system's athletic director Tuesday.

Denise Benn, whose son Arrelious Benn plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has an 11th grader at Woodson.

"That's his coach, that's his mentor, that's his motivating force right now," Denise said of her son Daniel's coach.

Woodson is one of the best teams in the city. Dozens of Woodson players have gone on to top colleges; some have made it to the NFL, like Josh Morgan of the Washington Redskins.

"He meant everything to me. He's part of the reason I started playing football," Morgan said. "Fuller was a great coach to a lot of people. He helped a lot of people's careers."

“It’s hard to apply a rule that in principle doesn’t meet what is going on,” says John Seard.

Seard’s son is the quarterback, a senior with interest from college teams. Seard says everyone was shocked when they learned one player’s address meant he was supposed to be at High Point High and not Northwestern. Seard said the sophomore played for only a few minutes in two games, but when the student’s actual residence and subsequent ineligibility came to light, the team learned they would have to forfeit two wins as a consequence.

Prince George’s County’s athletic director, Earl Hawkins, couldn’t be reached, but he recently told two local newspapers the student gave a false address. Michael Hardie, one of the team’s volunteer coaches, questions if the school was responsible to make sure the student was enrolled at the right school.

“Why do our kids who put in so much work have to be punished?” asks Hardie. “He’s not being punished. They just sent him back to where he came from.”

Prince George’s County schools wouldn’t say if the student accidentally or intentionally gave a false address, but with six senior players with college offers, three from Division I schools, parents argue it is an unfair call to punish them all.

“This type of black eye could create a scenario where my son or anyone else’s son could be looked at unfavorably,” says Seard.
