Maryland women beat Syracuse 11-10 to advance to lacrosse national finals

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Kara Cannizzaro scored four straight goals in a 7:20 span in the second half to help third-seeded North Carolina beat two-time defending national champion Northwestern 11-4 on Friday in the NCAA women's lacrosse semifinals.

Abbey Friend added three goals for the Tar Heels (17-3). North Carolina will play top-seeded Maryland, an 11-10 winner over No. 4 Syracuse in the second semifinal, in the final Sunday.

Brooke Griffin scored the go-ahead goal on an assist from Katie Schwarzmann with 2:51 left to lead top-seeded and undefeated Maryland (22-0), which has won 11 national titles, into its 21st championship game appearance. Kayla Treanor had four goals for the Orange (18-4).

"We're just really excited," North Carolina coach Jenny Levy said. "I really liked how we competed. I thought we were poised, we stuck together and we executed on things, especially on the defensive end, that were special."

Kat DeRonda had a goal and assist for second-seeded Northwestern (19-3). The Wildcats, the winners of seven of the last eight NCAA titles, also lost to North Carolina on Feb. 22.

"We made a lot of errors and didn't finish our shots," Northwestern coach Kelly Amonte Hiller said. "We had our chances, and on a big stage you have to be calm and cool and finish those chances. We didn't finish our opportunities."

Northwestern was 0 for 9 on free-position shots and matched a season low for goals.

"We wanted to make them uncomfortable, change things up and never let them get into a rhythm," Levy said.

North Carolina held Northwestern to 16 shots.

"We switched up our defense and every one of our defenders played so well," said North Carolina goalie Megan Ward, who made seven saves. "I feel really confident going into the championship game because our team played so well."

In North Carolina's only other appearance in the final, the Tar Heels lost to Northwestern 21-9 in 2009.

Friend scored two first-half goals to help North Carolina to a 4-1 halftime advantage. And the Tar Heels opened the second half with three straight goals, capped by Kelly Devlin's goal on a free position that put them up 7-1 with just under 23 minutes left.

Alyssa Leonard and Kelly Rich scored to pull Northwestern to 7-3 with 18:55 remaining, but Cannizzaro scored four straight goals over the next 7:20 to put the Tar Heels ahead 11-3 with 11:35 left. Cannizzaro, who has a team-high 57 goals, credited her teammates' performance - particularly in the first half when she was held scoreless.

"They totally shut me down (in the first half)," Cannizzaro said. "My team did amazing. When I get going, I think everyone feels a little momentum swing. But my team carried us in the first half and that's what allowed us to explode in the second half. My team was able to produce when I was shut down in the first half. I have to give everything to my team."

The Wildcats played short-handed in the final 15:45 after Leonard received a second yellow card. North Carolina will be playing a powerful Terps team.

Against Syracuse, Kelly McPartland had three goals, and Alex Aust, Beth Glaros and Taylor Cummings each had a pair of goals for Maryland, which claimed seven straight titles between 1995-2001 and won its last title in 2010.

McPartland's goal on a free position 4½ minutes into the second half put the Terps ahead 9-6, but Syracuse scored four straight over the next 7 minutes to go in front for the first time, 10-9.

McPartland tied with a goal from close range with just under 11 minutes remaining. After a long scoring drought, Griffin took a pass tallied from just in front of the crease with 2:51 left to send the Terps to the final.

The Terrapins led 5-4 when Syracuse's Bridget Daley scores with 1:16 left before intermission. But Glaros scored from close range on a pass from Schwarzmann with 35 seconds left, and Aust followed with a tally on a free position with 11 ticks left in the half, also off a feed from Schwarzmann, to put Syracuse up three goals at the break. Treanor had three goals and an assist for the Orange in the opening half.

Md. officials find no deficiencies in abortion death at Germantown clinic

GERMANTOWN, Md. (AP) - Maryland health officials investigating the death of a woman being treated at a Germantown abortion clinic found "no deficiencies" in her care.

The 29-year-old woman died after an abortion performed by Dr. LeRoy Carhart. He is one of a handful of doctors who acknowledge performing late-term abortions.

The Washington Post reports a broader survey released Friday by the Maryland Health Department looking at all 16 abortion facilities found the Germantown clinic was among 12 that had some deficiencies. The department found no problems presented an immediate or serious risk to patients.

State officials did find life-threatening deficiencies at another abortion provider, Associates in OB/GYN Care LLC. It operates abortion clinics in Silver Spring, Cheverly, Frederick and Baltimore. Its license was suspended in March and reinstated after problems were corrected.

Lauren Salzberg, Potomac Lice Lady

Lauren Salzberg is known as the “Potomac Lice Lady” and she says her business is booming because there is an overabundance of lice. She says the increase is due to lice’s resistance to over-the-counter products.

For the last two years, Salzberg has used her own line of all natural, organic oils and shampoos. She also has a special lice comb to treat about 20 clients a week.

But Salzberg says there continues to be a stigma attached to lice, even though research shows lice prefer clean hair to dirty hair.

“People think ‘Ewww, gross! I’m going to stay away from that person’,” explained Salzberg. “And the parents feel their child is going to be shunned or ostracized.”

Salzberg’s first treatments were when all three of her children – now 16, 14, and 10 - got lice at the same time. Salzberg is also a preschool teacher. She says getting rid of lice for good starts with a promise that the family will follow up at home after her treatments. But she says each time a child leaves lice-free - everybody wins.

“They leave here with like a big sigh,” says Salzberg. “They always say gosh, you've made our day. You've taken a big weight off our shoulders.”

Salzberg's treatments cost $90 an hour and treatment-time is about two hours.

I-95 traffic delays grow even worse on Memorial Day weekend

People heading south for the Memorial Day weekend are running into delays that stretch for miles. But for those who drive I-95 in Northern Virginia, the miserable delays aren't something isolated to holiday weekends.

VDOT is warning drivers to plan for major delays and closures this summer as road work moves forward along a 29-mile stretch of I-95, from the D.C. line to Stafford County, including construction of the new HOT lanes and new flyover ramps.

"It will always get better because we make improvements," says Steve Titunik of VDOT.

But he says I-95 at rush hour will always be like a popular restaurant.

"Everybody wants to eat Friday or Saturday at 7 or 8 and the place is packed," Titunik says. "You come earlier at 5 and you got all the tables you want. So it's a timing thing."

But on a weekend when the focus is on the destination, the journey is a major source of frustration…

The Campbells are making their familiar eight-hour trip from Pittsburgh to Norfolk - with four hungry boys in the back seat.

They say what is normally bad traffic here, is "crazy bad" this weekend.

And that is the feeling most drivers have traveling 95 in virginia these days -holidays or any day - and it won't get better any time soon…

Unfortunately for the Campbells, they're hitting 95's dinner rush.

Deandre Williams sentenced for robberies, assaults

A group that started as a hip hop and dance group called Show Out had some members who graduated to felonies.

At D.C. superior Court Friday, two members were sentenced for multiple beatings and robberies.

Court documents say Show Out members roamed northwest D.C., robbing and assaulting people at will. A security camera last June 5 captured images of them at a Chinatown bus stop at 3:20 a.m., where some members took a man's iPhone and beat him unconscious.

Deandre Williams, facing sentencing Friday, told the judge, “after viewing the video of my actions, I felt like an animal.”

He was sentenced to 11 and a 1/3 years.

Williams lawyer talked about the youths' troubled childhood.

The judge said it wasn't about robbery, it was about violence, noting while Williams was a fugitive in the D.C. case, he was arrested in Maryland for beating a homeless person.

Brookland neighbors battle over proposed new restaurant

A small group of D.C. residents is trying to keep a new restaurant and bar from opening in their Brookland neighborhood.

But other residents disagree, saying the group doesn't speak for the whole community.

Doris Johnson runs a store designed to help her clients relax. Called Total Relaxation, it specializes in making your day a little better.

It sits right next to the property, which if granted a liquor license, would become Brookland's finest bar and kitchen. Because her business is all about relaxation, she worries about the potential noise from the proposed restaurant and bar.

"I'm concerned on many levels," Johnson says. "I would like to also continue to have my customers come in and be able to park without having to battle for parking spaces."

Apparently, she is not alone. Two days ago, the Advisory Neighborhood Commission passed a resolution against the opening of Brookland's.

In addition to parking and noise, neighbors worry about proximity to schools and churches.

"A bar from eight in the morning to two in the morning," Johnson says. "That's 24 hours. I mean, give or take it's 24 hours."

But other residents in the Brookland neighborhood say the resolution isn't representative of overall feelings towards the restaurant. They say most neighbors are in favor of the restaurant/bar.

Instead of an empty building, some say a working restaurant would bring up property values and create a safer atmosphere.

"Look at Bloomingdale," says Larry Mosley, one of the neighbors. "Look what's going on with H Street. Look what's going on in NOMA. Having new vibrant businesses show up in the those neighborhoods actually turned those neighborhoods."

Over the phone, the owner tells ABC7 he knows there is strong support from the community, but he is willing to listen to the concerns of others.

"There has to be a middle ground and compromise, I think from both sides," Mosley says.

And the fight is just beginning. There are hearings scheduled for June and August where both sides will be able to air their concerns.

Rolling Thunder rumbles into D.C. area to honor POWs, MIAs, veterans

Continuing a decades-long tradition, tens of thousands of motorcycle riders are rumbling into the D.C. area for Memorial Day, coming from all across America.

Artie Muller and a few friends created Rolling Thunder to draw attention to Vietnam veterans still missing in action.

“We wanted to do a march and we wanted to do a motorcycle run,” Muller says. “And we started Rolling Thunder with both.”

The annual ride has grown from 2,200 bikes in 1988 to tens of thousands today, riding before hundreds of thousands of people.

One of the biggest events will be Friday night, a candlelight vigil at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at 9 p.m. The big ride around the District and across the Memorial Bridge to Arlington National Cemetery will start Sunday at noon.

“When you come across that Memorial Bridge and you hear that crowd cheer, go down Constitution Avenue and they're 8-10 deep you know Americans are out there and watching us and they care,” says Gary Scheffmeyer, national president of Rolling Thunder.

Biker and Vietnam veteran 'New York Myke' has been here every year, riding cross country from California. His riding partner this year is Hollywood actor Robert Patrick.

“One thing that I've really been able to feel glad about is to really let these guys know how much they did for us,” Patrick says.

Home base for most of the bikers while in the area is Crystal City, where there will be a near constant rumble in the air. A lot of money is being spent to support local businesses, but there’s a lot of noise, too.

Scheffmeyer says the ride focuses the nation’s attention on veterans issues and to the POW/MIA issue.

But now, as these veterans make their yearly ride, they also honor a new generation of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. They say they’re paying the support forward, ensuring this Memorial Day tradition will live on for more than just the memories of those killed or missing in Vietnam.

Metro doors close, separate man from service dog

When you have 14,000 plus followers on twitter, and you're the chief Washington correspondent for Yahoo news, tweets like this one tend to get attention.

#WMATA you suck for closing the doors so ruthlessly that you separated a disabled man FROM HIS SERVICE DOG. WTF?!? Cc: @unsuckdcmetro

— Olivier Knox (@OKnox) May 23, 2013

Knox tweeted that on a Red Line Shady Grove Bound Metro train Thursday night, the doors closed, separating a man from a service dog.

The doors slammed shut on the man and never reopened, Knox says. Several people tried to pry the door all the way open and the man finally let go of the leash and tumbled back in the Metro car.

Knox later acknowledged his initial read of the situation might have been wrong. The service dog could've been there for the child, not the dad.

The man’s wife and child got out and secured the dog. The man got off at the next stop.

Knox says there was no warning, no waiting and no evidence the driver looked back.

“They would've seen dog, bright leash and part of dad caught in the doors,” Knox says.

Computer logs for that train show doors were open for 15 seconds. The operator looked out the side window before initiating the close door command and “with the operator in the front of the train, seeing a leash in the door four or more cars back might be challenging ... this seems to be an unfortunate occurrence."

But Knox can't help but dwell on the “what ifs.”

“What if leash got stuck? What if it was a blind person? What if mom hadn't been on platform?” Knox asks.

Should residential storm shelters be mandatory?

(AP/ABC7) - After living nearly 20 years in their one-story brick home, Sherry and Larry Wells finally won the lottery - for a state rebate on a home storm shelter, that is. A contractor finished installing the concrete bunker beneath the slab of their garage in early May. About three weeks later, the shelter saved their lives when a tornado that killed 24 people tore through their neighborhood.

Should residential storm shelters be mandatory in the midst of Tornado Alley? Absolutely, says Sherry Wells, "it's the best thing ever."

But not a single state currently requires them in homes. And not many communities do so either, though officials in the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore are now considering it.

Despite the life-saving potential of personal storm shelters, the cost remains a deterrent. So, too, does a general resistance to government mandates in politically conservative states such as Oklahoma, where tornadoes are most prevalent. Even the director of an association of storm shelter manufacturers, based in Texas, is opposed to a storm shelter mandate for new homes.

"Any time a governmental entity says 'thou shalt' and tries to take an individual decision into the public domain, it's going to get pushback, and you're also going to raise the cost of things," said Ernst Kiesling, executive director of the National Storm Shelter Association and a retired civil engineering professor Texas Tech University.

The science of storm shelters has advanced considerably since Dorothy failed to make it to the tornado cellar at Aunty Em's Kansas farm in the 1938 movie the Wizard of Oz. Some shelters still are dug underground in the backyard. But they are increasingly made with specially fabricated concrete and steel doors to meet Federal Emergency Management Agency specifications. And they aren't necessarily underground. In some cases, closets or bathrooms are being fortified to double as "safe rooms" that can withstand furious winds even if the rest of the house is blown away.

In 2011, Oklahoma announced the SoonerSafe incentive program, offering federally financed rebates of up to $2,000 to residents who install storm shelters. The state uses a lottery-style drawing to select rebate winners from among the thousands of online applications. Sherry Wells said she won this year. She and her husband decided to get the biggest shelter available- a vault-like box with wooden benches - at a cost of $4,800. The project was so freshly finished that the Wells hadn't even submitted their rebate forms when the tornado hit on Monday.

"If it wasn't for the hand of God and the cellar, we wouldn't be here," Wells said as she sorted through the rubble of her home Thursday.

A little over 3,000 residential storm shelters are registered in Moore, a city of about 56,000, said community development director Elizabeth Jones.

Moore Mayor Glenn Lewis wants to propose a city ordinance requiring all new homes to have storm shelters. But realistically, he said, city officials may be able to require them only in new assisted living facilities and apartment complexes because of cost concerns. Contractors will be part of the conversation with the City Council to see whether a broader requirement is possible, Lewis said.

"We want to be competitive," he said. "We don't want to price them out of the market."

Asked at a news conference if a similar mandate might be considered statewide, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin quickly shot down the suggestion.

"We aren't going to require people to do anything, but if someone chooses to do that, we certainly encourage it," Fallin said.

In the aftermath of a devastating tornado two years ago, the Joplin City Council in southwest Missouri considered several code and policy changes for homes but ultimately decided against a safe room requirement, City Manager Mark Rohr said.

"I think there's a viewpoint that that's a personal determination to make," Rohr said.

About 7,500 homes were damaged or destroyed in the May 2011 Joplin tornado. Rohr said 84 percent of homes have been rebuilt, fixed or have permits pending. While the city doesn't require safe rooms, it recommends that people "shelter in place" in the event of a storm - either in a basement, an interior closet or a safe room - rather than leaving to try to make it to one of several community storm shelters being built at Joplin schools.

Some local governments have taken a partial step toward a residential storm shelter mandate. A Wichita, Kan., ordinance adopted in 1994 requires storm shelters in existing mobile home parks with at least 20 homes and in new parks with at least 10 mobile homes. A 2000 ordinance adopted in Wichita's home of Sedgwick County also required storm shelters for all new mobile home parks with space for at least 10 homes.

Alabama is the only state that requires new schools to be built with safe rooms, according to the National Storm Shelter Association. But similar mandates could come in the future. Kiesling said a draft of the 2015 update for the International Building Code calls for new schools to have storm-safe areas. Many states and cities incorporate those building standards into their own laws.

Although several schools in the Oklahoma City area already have safe rooms, the two elementary schools that were destroyed by Monday's tornado did not have them. Seven children died in one of those schools.

Sydney Angle, 9, was among the seven children who died beneath the rubble of Plaza Towers elementary school when the tornado touched down Monday.

Her friends and softball teammates are now collecting donations. They're doing it by filling helmets with cash, raising thousands of dollars to support Sydney's family, who not only lost a child, but also lost their home.

Yet the question remains. If the government were to mandate safe rooms in schools or homes, would people actually use them?

With a tornado visibly approaching their Moore home, 20-year-old Maritza Marin fled by vehicle with her mother, father and a younger sister. They drove several blocks away, then returned to see a neighbor's red car dumped onto what once was her bedroom. Marin said their home had no storm shelter. She likes the mayor's proposed requirement, but she's not sure she would use a storm shelter if she again found herself facing a tornado.

Park Service ending furloughs early

WASHINGTON (AP) - The National Park Service is ending unpaid leave for U.S. Park Police officers earlier than expected.

National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis says the furloughs will end on June 3, after just three days off, because the agency has found other ways to offset automatic budget cuts imposed by Congress.

The furloughs were to have ended in September with up to 14 days off for officers.

U.S. Park Police patrol the National Mall, the Statue of Liberty and some of the nation's most famous landmarks in New York City and San Francisco.

Jarvis says it's become possible to end the furlough period early because of cost-cutting measures the Park Police have already taken, including limiting overtime and travel, restricting use of helicopters and canceling a class of new recruits.

Metro Transit Police say they arrested Derrick Davis of Laurel. He was charged this week in Prince George's County District Court.

Metro says police detectives contacted Davis through eBay to try to purchase a defibrillator. An undercover detective posed as a potential buyer and arranged to purchase the device for $300 in cash.

After he was arrested, police say Davis admitted that he had stolen 13 of the defibrillators from Metro facilities. They are valued at about $1,400 each.

The Maryland women's lacrosse team will put their undefeated season on the line Friday night when they battle Syracuse in the NCAA semi-finals at Villanova Stadium.

"If you think about those things, that's the only thing you're focused on," said senior Maryland midfielder Katie Schwarzmann. "You're scared to lose, and you're not playing to win."

Earlier this season, Maryland beat Syracuse, but in this final four, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

"My freshman year, it was the exact same final four, so you get familiar with these teams," said senior Maryland attacker Alex Aust. "Every year is a different year, and I think this team is one of the best I've played on."

With eight seniors on the roster, the Terps are experienced and as they will tell you, almost like family.

"We've been through a lot," said Schwarzmann. "We have a lot of things we can teach the younger players and give it our last go."

Aside from Syracuse, this Final Four has powerhouse programs, namely Northwestern. The Wildcats have won seven out of the last eight NCAA championships, their only loss was to Maryland in 2010.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The biographer whose extramarital affair with then-CIA director David Petraeus triggered his resignation says she regrets the relationship.

Paula Broadwell told WSOC-TV in Charlotte on Thursday that she has remorse for the harm and sadness she caused her family. She is married with two young children.

Broadwell spoke briefly last month with a reporter outside a Charlotte prayer breakfast, but Thursday was her first in-depth media interview since the scandal broke.
Police say Noland lured the little boy into a pickup truck on 8th Street in Arlington. In the car, police say, Noland showed him pornographic images on his iPad, then began touching the boy.

It all happened on the 3600 block of 8th street while the boy’s parents were outside nearby.

“It's pretty surprising, everyone around here is pretty friendly and looks out for each other,” says Kris Coronado, an Arlington resident.

The incident happened at dusk, just about 8 p.m., last Tuesday. Neighbors in the picturesque neighborhood say they're upset but won't let fear control their behavior.

Police say Noland is currently being held without bond. Police add that Noland lives with his parents in Arlington. A woman who says she is his mother declined an interview.

William Dunkin and his family are headed to Delaware.

They left Georgia last night to beat the crush of commuters expected on area roads.

“We tried to but we still hit a little something,” he says.

Throughout the morning, traffic on the Bay Bridge steadily increased.

Hoping to avoid bridge backups later Friday, Sheri Nassikas took the day off.
She says so far the trip to Rehoboth hasn't been too bad.

“Through D.C. was easy but once we started getting closer to the bridge, it slowed down a bit,” she says.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says more than 800,000 people in the D.C. region are driving more than fifty miles to celebrate the unofficial start of summer. That's slightly down from last year.

Superstorm Sandy: Jersey shore ribbon-cutting

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey rolled out some of its big guns Friday to proclaim that the shore is back following Superstorm Sandy, using Gov. Chris Christie and the cast of MTV's "Jersey Shore" to tell a national audience the state is ready for summer fun.

In fact, they even hired fun. - the rock band whose anthem "We Are Young" captures the spirit of this blue-collar oceanfront playground that was devastated by the Oct. 29 storm and has been furiously rebuilding ever since. The band played a free concert on the beach.

"This is known as a happy place," said Paul "Pauly D" Del Vecchio, one of the cast members of "Jersey Shore," which was filmed here until wrapping up last year. "Right after the storm, it was the exact opposite: dead, silent. To see this place being rebuilt makes me happy."

Christie, who has been racing up and down the shore opening boardwalks and talking up shore tourism all week as the summer kickoff approached, appeared on the "Today" show Friday, giving him a national pulpit to preach his message of recovery.

"Anybody who lives in New Jersey, the Jersey shore is in your heart," Christie said. "This means everything to our state."

The show was broadcast from Seaside Heights, where the storm swept a roller coaster into the ocean, making for one of Sandy's iconic images. The roller coaster was taken away this month, but Casino Pier, the seaside amusement park where it used to sit, plans to have 18 rides open this summer.

Christie said about 80 percent of the shore will look as it did last summer, and acknowledged more work needs to be done to fully recover. He is to tour parts of the storm-hit shore next Tuesday with President Obama.

Declaring the shore officially open for the summer, the governor cut a 5.5-mile long ribbon symbolically linking some of the shore towns that were hardest hit by the storm. Mike Janela, an adjudicator for Guinness World records, said the ribbon set a new record, besting the previous longest ribbon by about a mile in length.

Tourism is a $38 billion industry in New Jersey, and shore towns are counting on a good summer to help them recoup major losses they incurred after the storm. A storm that parked itself over the shore and was expected to bring rain through Sunday morning didn't exactly help.

But Kevin Stewart, owner of JR's Ocean bar & Grill on the boardwalk, led a Champagne toast with his bar employees right after Christie cut the ribbon.

"Here's to a great summer!" he said as they clinked plastic cups that would normally be filled with beer.

JR's only put up its new sign at 5:30 a.m. Friday, about 90 minutes before Christie arrived for his broadcast. The business was devastated by Sandy, with 6 feet of water in it that left behind 5 feet of sand. It lost all its inventory and signs, which cost about $300,000 to replace.

But Stewart said he is optimistic about this summer at the shore.

"If we get good weather, the people will still come here," he said. "Ninety percent or better of this town is rebuilt and ready to go. At the end of the day, this just might work."

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, of "Jersey Shore," said crowds will be back this summer.

"You just come here to have a good time," she said. "It's a great place. You come here with your friends. Everybody's here, it's getting rebuilt; it's just amazing."

Her cast-mate Deena Cortese urged tourists to patronize Seaside Heights as it recovers.

"It's kind of like a family on the boardwalk here," she said. "Everybody needs to come this summer, especially for them."

Mark Romanowski, a bartender at JR's, said the "Jersey Strong" slogan that has adorned T-shirts, bumper stickers and sweatshirts for fundraising efforts since the storm is not a cliche.

"It really is the mentality we have here," he said. "People in Jersey, we may have our differences but the one common denominator is we have each other's backs."

Paul Tudor Jones tells UVA audience: Having children a focus 'killer' for women

The shot heard ‘round the world came when hedge fund billionaire and University of Virginia contributor Paul Tudor Jones said women basically can't be successful macro global traders if they have children.

“As soon as that baby's lips touched that girl's bosom, forget it. Every single investment idea…..” is thwarted, he said, by emotional distractions amid the unique maternal experience.

The 58-year-old billionaire and father of three daughters said he was just talking about macro traders, who are on call 24/7.

“This was an investment panel of investors and traders. We were not talking about a variety of other activities. I'm talking about a very specific skill set required for a very specific pursuit,” he said.

Jones called having children a focus “killer” for women, adding that if women continue to have children, the business world will be dominated by men.

His reference came from two women who worked with him at a stock brokerage in the late 1970s. Jones says that his remarks were meant only to apply to the world of global macro trade.

Jones’ remarks were made during an April session at UVA’s McIntire School of Commerce.

Jones says he encourages to go into the trade industry.

He later responded: “Macro trading requires a high degree of skill, focus and repetition. Live events, such as birth, divorce, death of a loved one … are obstacles to success in this specific field of finance.”

Claude Alexander Allen arrested for homicide in Gaithersburg

The 20-year-old son of a former aide to President George W. Bush was charged in Gaithersburg on Friday, accused by police of killing a man with a hatchet.

Claude Alexander Allen III, of Gaithersburg, was arrested by Montgomery County police and online court records show he's been charged with first-degree murder.

The killing occurred at the Gaithersburg home that property records show is owned by Allen's mother and father, Claude A. Allen.

Police say they were called to the home around midnight by a man who said he had killed someone who had tried to break into his home. Officers who arrived determined that it wasn't a break-in, and police say the younger Allen, and the victim, 25-year-old Michael Phillip Harvey, knew each other. Harvey's body was found in woods outside the home.

“We have no signs of forced entry,” Says Capt. Jim Daly of the Montgomery County Police. “At this point our information is that this occurred shortly before we were called. Because we did not have a forced entry here we believe that the two parties did know each other.”

Police didn't immediately reveal a motive.

The suspect lived with his parents and three siblings. He was a student at the University of Richmond, initially starting there on an Army ROTC scholarship, until he dropped out in the Spring of 2012.

The elder Allen was a former domestic policy adviser in the Bush White House. He resigned in 2006 after being arrested for shoplifting at a Target store in Gaithersburg. He pleaded guilty to theft that same year, effectively ending a once-promising political career, and was fined and placed on probation.

He told the judge at his sentencing hearing that he had lost perspective while working long hours and getting little sleep in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He's been a member at Covenant Life Church, an evangelical church in Gaithersburg.

"The very sad story being reported in the news today is the only information we have at this time. We are grieving and praying for the family of the victim, the Allen family and all involved," church spokesman Don Nalle said in a statement.

Those who knew the family are shocked by what happened overnight.

“I'm surprised because this family seems to be a very nice family,” says neighbor Mavra Diavadis.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Lisa Grant, Virginia mom sentenced for mooning school bus

SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) - A Suffolk mother will spend weekends behind bars after mooning her son's school bus following a confrontation with the driver.

Media outlets report that 34-year-old Lisa Grant was convicted this week of disorderly conduct. She was accused of mooning the school bus with roughly 45 students aboard last November.

Grant admits she exchanged heated words with the bus driver but claims she did not flash any skin. Her attorney says she only bared her underwear when mooning the bus.

She confronted the driver after she sent a note home that Grant's middle school-aged son was misbehaving. A school spokeswoman says the note was a warning.

Grant was given a six-month jail sentence with five months suspended. She will serve that time on weekends. She also must pay a $250 fine.

Obama addresses Naval Academy graduates

For Keegan Merkert of Severna Park it was a moment of supreme joy. And having shaken the president's hand and received his diploma Friday it was also a moment to finally exhale after years of hard work.

“I'm relieved to be done and really looking forward to a Naval career,” Merkert says. Merkert is ABC7 reporter Brad Bell’s nephew.

Thanks to the sequester, the Blue Angels didn't fly over the graduation ceremony at the Navy Marine Corps stadium. But all the other traditions carried on.

As he does every four years, the president handed diplomas to the top students and shook the hands or hugged all the others.

He also addressed a current concern in the military.

Obama issued a pointed call Friday for an end to sexual assaults in the military, appealing to graduating midshipmen to display honor and moral courage to contain what has become a growing epidemic.

Obama spoke at the commissioning ceremony for 1,047 midshipmen, telling the 841 men and 206 women that the wrongdoing of a few can damage the nation's institutions, from government to Wall Street, and that "even in our military we've seen how the misconduct of some can have effects that ripple far and wide"

"Those who commit sexual assault are not only committing a crime, they are threatening the trust and discipline that make out military strong," he said.

A Pentagon report released earlier this month estimated that up to 26,000 military members may have been sexually assaulted last year. It said thousands of victims are still unwilling to come forward despite stronger efforts to curb the crimes.

Obama also urged the new Navy ensigns and Marine second lieutenants to use the leadership skills and values learned at the Naval Academy to help prevent behavior on the battlefield that can damage the image of the U.S. overseas.

"In our digital age, a single image from the battlefield of troops falling short of their standards can go viral and endanger our forces and undermine our efforts to achieve security and peace," the president said.

Obama spoke amid cool temperatures and a light rain, which drove away many spectators and left large sections of the blue stadium seating empty.

And then when all had crossed the stage, the new ensigns toss away their midshipmen hats and find their parents for the most emotional of traditions.

Hugs, the presentation of officer hats and shoulder boards, and tears.

“I graduated in 1976 my son is in 2013. Good time. Special wonderful,” says Earnest Halton.

Memorial Day travel: Virginia to boost road patrols

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police will boost road patrols over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Increased patrols begin Friday and continue through Monday night. It's part of the annual Operation CARE national traffic-enforcement effort.

The additional patrols are aimed at reducing crashes, fatalities and injuries caused by speeding, impaired driving and failure to use seat belts.
Last year police cited nearly 11,600 speeders and 3,000 reckless drivers and arrested 137 impaired drivers. Eleven people died in traffic accidents in Virginia last year. Ten of them weren't wearing seat belts.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says it expects slightly more than 1 million Virginians to travel during the holiday weekend. That's down 1.6 percent from 2012.

From Thursday through Monday, 31.2 million Americans will drive 50 miles or more to a beach, campground or other getaway, according to car lobbying group AAA. That's a small increase from last year but still well short of the record 37.3 million people who drove during the holiday in 2005.

Gas will cost slightly more this year. The national average price for a gallon of gasoline has risen 7 cents in the past week to $3.66 and could increase over the weekend. Gas averaged $3.64 last Memorial Day. Still, the price isn't expected to reach the 2011 Memorial Day average of $3.79.

The total number of holiday travelers should decline almost 1 percent to 34.8 million, AAA says, because fewer will choose to fly. AAA estimates that 2.3 million travelers will take to the skies, down 8 percent from last year.

"American travelers are experiencing fee fatigue and frustration with everything from higher fares to airport security. As a result, many are choosing road travel," Robert L. Darbelnet, CEO of AAA, said in a statement.
